‘Vae’ Ballou Dies at Age 96; Services to be Held Oct. 21

Eunavae “Vae” Ballou

Eunavae “Vae” Ballou passed peacefully in her sleep early on the morning of October 11, at the Sitka Pioneers Home. She was 96 years old.
A memorial service will be held at noon Monday, October 21, at The Church of Christ, 1113 Edgecumbe Drive.
Vae was born July 15, 1928, in Oklahoma, daughter of Cullen Price Ogletree and Fannie Vashti Rowe. She graduated from Madera High School in Oklahoma and married her high school sweetheart, Donal R. Ballou, on February 25, 1949.
Shortly afterward she joined Don in Sitka, where he was stationed in the Coast Guard.
Vae worked at the Bank and the Cellar, and also babysat friends’ kids. She loved children, and raised two boys of her own, Michael and Scott. Sadly, she lost her daughter Donavae shortly after birth.
Vae loved to crochet and knit, and made quite a few blankets – she was very skilled at that and in sewing.
She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.
Vae was preceded in death by husband Don and daughter Donavae Ballou.
She is survived by sons Michael Ballou of Madera, California, and Jeffrey “Scott” Ballou of Juneau; grandchildren Michael, Mark, Jeremiah, Savannah, Kristin, Kyle and Haley; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family may be contacted at P.O. Box 33461, Juneau, AK 99803.
