Dr. Wayne Thomas Hagerman
Dr. Wayne Thomas Hagerman passed away on Wednesday, October 24, at his home in Lacey, Washington, after a courageous battle with cancer. The longtime Sitka optometrist was 80.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gloria; daughter Heather Stein of Eugene, Oregon; and sons Grant and Blake Hagerman of Sitka.
Wayne was born on November 4, 1943, in Petersburg, the son of Edward and Lillian Hagerman. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1962 and went on to earn his optometry degree from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon.
It was at a friend’s wedding in Petersburg that he met Gloria, and they married shortly thereafter.
Wayne and Gloria spent their first year and a half of marriage in Juneau, where Wayne enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He served as a captain in the Medical Service Corps, practicing as an optometrist in Korea.
After his service, the couple moved to Redmond, Washington, where their three children were born.
In a pivotal moment in his career, Wayne in 1983 purchased an optometric practice in Sitka, where he and family have lived for the 41 years since.
Wayne found joy in his work, his family, and the community of Sitka. An avid golfer and sports enthusiast, he also enjoyed racquetball and handball, and took pride in his lawn.
Wayne will be remembered for his gentle spirit and kindness.
A memorial service will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on December 21 at Harrigan Centennial Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sitka United Methodist Church Wayne T. Hagerman Fund.
