John Gassman Services to Be Held on Sept. 1

John William Gassman, a longtime Sitka resident, died Aug. 21 at his home in Sitka, surrounded by his family.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church with a reception to follow in the Church Hall.
John was born Oct. 2, 1943, in Eugene, Ore., the son of William and Ruthellen Gassman.
John and Jan Davies were married on Sept. 20, 1969, in Seattle, Wash. John visited Sitka at least twice a year and liked it so much he and Jan moved here in 1973.
He loved to golf and his favorite place to golf was on the Big Island in Hawaii with T. Cole, also of Sitka.
John held a few different jobs throughout his time in Sitka. He worked for the Alaska Pulp Company for 20 years, and when the mill shut down in 1993 he was the Wood Room foreman.
John also giving visitors tours of Sitka, and worked many years at Sitka Tours as a tour guide and doing ferry pick-ups.
Finally, John worked for Alaska Airlines for 12 years as a ramper, in Operations, and as a Customer Service Agent.
John was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ruthellen Gassman, and a son, Gregory Gassman.
Immediate survivors include his wife, Janet Gassman; son Ted Gassman and his wife Lisa; son Michael Gassman and his partner Karleen Leighton; granddaughter Emma Gassman; mother-in-law Megan Davies of Vancouver Island; brother Richard Gassman and his wife Terri of Portland, Ore.; sister Carol Gassman of Springfield, Ore.; nieces Gwen and Julianna and their families; brother-in-law Alan Davies of Anchorage; nephews Shawn and Roben Davies and their families; and numerous cousins and their families.

Colliver donated the money after her business, Colliver Shoes, borrowed the truck to use during Moonlight Madness. The truck is in need of an estimated $20,000 worth of restoration work, Swearingen said.

Sitka Community Hospital Administrator Martin Tirador and hospital board chairman Lawrence Porter told the Assembly Tuesday about the need for a new hospital to replace the existing 18-year-old one. The cost would be about $6.89 million with $2.2 million of that required locally.
