Alan Riste

Alan Leroy Riste, a Sitka resident for 47 years, died Sept. 18 at his home. He was 77.
At his request, no services will be held.
He was born May 28, 1935, in Oroville, Wash., the son of Robert and Dorothy (Peterson) Riste. He grew up in Oroville.
He loved hunting, fishing and the outdoors, and was passionate about baseball. Two days after he volunteered for the military draft in 1955 he received a letter from the New York Yankees about trying out for the team as a pitcher.
After serving in the U.S. Army, he attended Central Washington University, 1960-64, and received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry.  
He married Nona Morgan on Jan. 25, 1964, and in March 1965 they came to Sitka, where he worked for Alaska Pulp Corp. as a process engineer and lab supervisor.
Survivors include is wife, Nona Riste; brothers Bob Riste and Ben Riste; sisters Dolly Sneve and Vikki Riste-Dillon; children Alana Riste, Melissa Plosay and Brian Riste; and grandchildren Zach Riste, Ivy Riste, Kaci Bellon and Alan Plosay.

The Youth Totem Pole Project blessing of the log ceremony will be held at Sitka National Historical Park visitor center. Pacific High youths and carver Tommy Joseph will be introduced and the story and design of the totem pole project will be presented.

50 YEARS AGO

February 1975

Sitka Volunteer Fire Department reports ice on Swan Lake is 7-9 inches deep and safe for skating. However, officials warn skaters to avoid the end of the lake near Lakeside Grocery, since the ice is thinner there.
