Kathryn “Katie” Cheney Young

Kathryn “Katie” Cheney Young, 98, “friend and loved one, passed from life in this world on Dec. 21, 2012, to live on in the hereafter.”
A service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Alaska Memorial Park in Juneau. A Juneau resident for more than 72 years, she had moved to the Sitka Pioneers Home four  years ago.
Katie was born on Aug. 12, 1914, in Warren, Minn., the daughter of Nina Porter and Dudley Oakwood. Her siblings were Wanda and John.
She attended some college in Minnesota, and moved to Juneau in 1936. She worked at the Juneau High School as an attendance clerk, and at St. Anne’s Hospital and the employment office over the years.
She and her husband of 45 years, Newton Young, raised three children, Peter Young, now of Chehalis, Wash., John Young of Juneau, and Paul (and wife Gayle) Young of Port Alexander. She also is survived by six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Katie loved to read and was also quite a knitter. She used to enjoy “dancing up a storm!” her family and friends said, and “You always knew Katie was up when you smelled the popcorn cooking.”
Katie had a great sharp sense of humor,  and she loved children – she often talked about the children with whom she had worked over the years.
