Stanley Drew Davis

Stanley Drew Davis, a U.S. Forest Service archaeologist for more than 20 years, died Dec. 6, 2012, in Colorado Springs, Colo.
    In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held, but family and friends will have a celebration of his life later this summer in Sitka.
    Stan was born Nov. 14, 1942, in Las Animas, Colo., the son of Henry Rexel and Mary Helene (Brownlee) Davis. He graduated from Aurora High School in 1961, and attended the University of Northern Colorado, where he graduated with a master’s in anthropology.
    In 1996 he received his doctorate in philosophy from Texas A&M after writing his dissertation on the archaeology of the Yakutat foreland.
    He lived in Sitka from 1974 until 1997. His work with the Forest Service here included digs at Starrigavan and Hidden Falls as well as Yakutat.
    Stan loved Jeopardy, arguing with the History Channel, watching the Denver Broncos play, and digging in the dirt.
    He was a member of the Alaska Anthropological Association.
    He is survived by his daughter Kimberly Davis; son Cullen Davis, wife Anne and their children Sydney and Chance; and son Cam Davis and children Darin and Josh, all of Sitka.
    With his love for lifelong learning, his family asks that memorial donations be made to the University of Alaska Southeast, Sitka Campus, scholarship fund.
