Marian Meland

Former Sitka resident Marian Meland, of Terry, Mont., passed away peacefully at the Prairie Community Hospital of natural causes on April 19, 2013. She was 86.
Marian Brown was born on March 30, 1927, the daughter of Ralph and Florence Brown, at Eau Claire, Wis.She grew up and attended school in Oakland, Ore., where she graduated from high school. On Nov. 24, 1979, she married the love of her life, Pete Meland, in Petersburg, They made their home in Sitka until Pete’s retirement in about 1983.
They lived in Monona, Iowa, for six years. In 1989 they moved to Myrtle Creek, Ore., to be closer with family and built a new home. They resided in the Myrtle Creek and Roseburg area  until the time of Pete’s death in 2003.
In 2006 Marian moved to Fallon, Mont., where she remained until the time of her death.
Marian loved fishing, hunting, cooking and doing crafts. She was an avid quilter and loved to sew and do oil paintings.
Marian’s family would like to thank Dan and Dawnya Kirkpatrick for taking special care of Marian for the last several years. Marian enjoyed her time with them and grew especially fond of their children Micah and Shawnee.
Marian is survived by her children, Frank (Judy) Cramer of Fallon, Dave (Sue) Meland of Salem, Ore., Mike (Paula) Cramer of Myrtle Creek, Ore., and Carolyn Cramer of Sutherlin, Ore.; four grandchildren, Shasta Gish, Russell Cramer, Keith Cramer and Rebecca Cramer and numerous great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Pete and one brother, Delmar Brown.
A memorial service was held April 22, at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Terry, Mont.

The Youth Totem Pole Project blessing of the log ceremony will be held at Sitka National Historical Park visitor center. Pacific High youths and carver Tommy Joseph will be introduced and the story and design of the totem pole project will be presented.

Sitka Volunteer Fire Department reports ice on Swan Lake is 7-9 inches deep and safe for skating. However, officials warn skaters to avoid the end of the lake near Lakeside Grocery, since the ice is thinner there.
