George Young

George Paxton Young, a resident of the Sitka Pioneers Home, passed away peacefully on June 21 at the age of 82.
Services were held 2 p.m. Monday, June 24, at Sitka Christian Center.
George was born Nov. 16, 1930, in Farwell, Texas, to Ephraham and Urah B. Young, the fourth of 10 children. He lived on the family farm until graduating from Bovina High School.  He then studied at Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, Texas, and earned a B.A. degree in art.
In 1953, he married Fredi Christie, and they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Also during his college years he felt the call of God to be a pastor. After college, he studied at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, where he prepared for full-time ministry with the Spanish-speaking community.
Following seminary, George attended Spanish Language School in San Jose, Costa Rica.  During the years that followed, he pastored several churches in Texas and Oklahoma. The couple then went as non-denominational missionaries to Peru, South America, and later to Alaska. They had lived in Sitka for more than eight years.
George loved his family, and friends, and always believed in investing his life in people.  He never met a stranger.  His faith in God never wavered even through his ordeal with Parkinson’s Disease.
George is survived by his wife, Fredi, and son Clyde of Sitka. He is also survived by his daughters, Peggy Beagle of Fairbanks and Elisa Tobin of Anchorage; 10 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Donnie B. Young of Fort Worth; and one sister, Lillian Allen of Bunnell, Florida.
Preceding him in death was his son, Paxton Rex Young.
George will be greatly missed by family and friends. “We are honored to have had his example as a husband, father, and Godly leader of our family.  We are deeply grateful for the compassionate love and care provided by the Sitka Pioneers Home,” his family said. “We also want to express appreciation to all the dear people of Sitka who have touched our lives in so many ways.”
