Former Sitka resident Karen Howard of Blanchard, Idaho, died Wednesday, July 31, 2013, surrounded by her family. She was 66.
Karen was born Aug. 21, 1946, in Sitka to Harry and Kate Sulser.
She attended Sitka High School.
She and Ray Howard were married in Sitka on Feb. 1, 1964. They owned and operated the Nugget Restaurant at the airport for several years. Later they lived in Craig, where they operated the Dockside Café located in Craig, the Dockside Galley on the MV Prince of Wales, and the Dockside Galley located in Knudson Cove in Ketchikan.
Karen was a dedicated mother and grandmother, and a remarkable, kind and caring person.
She was known throughout Alaska, Washington and several other states for her famous pies.
She loved gardening and sharing her cooking, quilting and painting with family and friends.
Her spirit will live on in the hearts and memories of all those who loved her.
Those left to cherish Karen’s memory include her husband Ray; her daughter Rhonda and husband Mike Whitmore; her son Ray and wife Emily; and grandson Shane. Also surviving are her mother, Kate Sulser; her sisters and their husbands, Vicki and Alan Slade, Linda and Rick Heim, and Sandy and Dan Baird; and brothers Scott Sulser and David Sulser.
Her extended family included Ray’s brother Bob and wife Mary Howard; his sister Summer Bourdlaies and her husband Lynn Stout; his sister-in-law Patsy and her husband Jim Scribner; and Karen’s many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her dad, Harry Sulser, and her sister Susan and husband Dave Frank.
Karen’s wishes were to be cremated. Private services will be held by the family.
Memorials may be made to Special Olympics of Sitka in her memory.

Western Illinois’ Travis Watson was named Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week by the Mid-Continent Conference after a successful campaign in recent individual and relay team events. Watson, a 2000 Sitka High graduate, is a senior in engineering technology. He is the son of Cathy Watson and the late Craig H. Watson.

Marilyn Knapp, president of the Greater Sitka Arts Council, announced today the council will solicit local businesses and individuals for scholarships to be awarded to Sitka students planning to attend the Regional Fine Arts Camp on the Sheldon Jackson College campus in July.
