Aurora Alebin Arce

Early in the morning of April 18, 2014, Aurora Alebin Arce passed away peacefully. She was being visited and comforted by family and friends at Sitka Community Hospital. She was 91.
Viewings will be 8-10 p.m. tonight and 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Prewitt’s Funeral Home. The funeral will be noon Thursday, April 24, at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, with Father Bill Zamborsky officiating.
Interment will be at Sitka National Cemetery. Afterward, a reception will be held at the church’s Corrigan Hall.
Aurora was born to Maria Apenir and Higino Alebin on Oct. 9, 1922, in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines.
She married Avelino Arce, a World War II veteran, on Sept. 17, 1947, at St. Paul Cathedral.
After half her life living with hardship in the Philippines, she left for Hawaii in 1977 for a better lifestyle. She worked for several hotels and privately-owned condominiums as a housekeeper and as a seamstress. After retiring in 1987, she and her husband followed their daughter Agrifina Castillo to Sitka, which became home.
In the 25-plus years in Sitka, she continued doing what she loved best, sewing up together the needs brought to her by her children and grandchildren.
Along with her passion for sewing, was cooking and feeding her family members when they visited. After many hours a day sewing and cooking, she enjoyed relaxing in front of the TV,  watching game shows and sporting events – mainly tennis.
Aurora was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Samuel Arce and Noel Arce; and a daughter Agrifina Castillo.
She is survived by sons Mario Arce and his wife Linda Arce, Ray Arce and wife Nattie Olalde, Efren Arce and wife Evelyn, and Dennis Arce and wife Shirley, all of Sitka; daughters Olive A. Carrazco and husband Jesus, of Sitka, Wilma A. Buen and husband Willie of Converse, Texas, and Erlinda Ragedi and husband Jose of the Philippines; and son-in-law Mario Castillo, Sitka.
Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews  from around the world also survive.
Pallbearers will be Jesus Carrazco, Karel Uddipa, Efren Arce Jr., Mario Castillo, Glenn Tuzon, Jose Carlos Jr., Noel Arce and Ryan Costelo.

The Department of Fish and Game called a co-op opening today to catch the 1,000 tons remaining in the Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery. This year’s quota is 11,192 tons, with 51 permit holders taking part.

Gov. Jay Hammond has named two Sitkans to state boards, Rep. Dick Eliason told the Sentinel from Juneau. August Andersen was appointed to the Alaska Board of Education, and Clint Buckmaster was named to the Alaska Board of Fish.
