Dolores “De” Marilyn Ingwersen

Dolores “De” Marilyn Ingwersen, a longtime resident of Sitka and Alaska, entered into rest in Sitka on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014.
    Services are scheduled 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Her ashes will be interred in the altar of St. Peter’s, near those of her daughter, Kathleen.
    De was born March 29, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, to Walter and Josephine Geiger. She attended school and graduated from junior college in the Chicago area.
    While in Chicago, she met and married her first husband, Dr. Walter Massey. They moved to Juneau in 1955 and lived on the vessel Researcher while docked at the Juneau harbor.
    Her first two children, Kathleen Massey and Denise Massey, were born in Juneau.
    While living in Juneau she worked for the Alaska Development Board, the Territorial agency that assisted the Japanese in establishing their pulp mill in Sitka. In 1958, the Masseys moved along with their vessel to Sitka, where son Brian Massey was born.
    De was very active in Sitka. She worked at the Alaska Pulp Co. mill as the manager’s secretary; then did bookkeeping for Samson Tug & Barge.
    She married Bernie Ingwersen in 1963, and they moved back to Elkhorn, Nebraska, where she served for five years as the municipal clerk. After moving back to Sitka, she was city clerk for the City of Sitka for nine years, and also served one term on the Sitka Assembly.
    She also briefly served as the manager of Alps Federal Credit Union. She volunteered many years on the Kettleson Memorial Library Board and on the Alps Credit Union Supervisory Committee.
    She was the treasurer of the Sitka Concert Association until its demise, then served as treasurer and chairman of the Sitka Summer Music Festival during its start-up phase. She also took part in various theater productions and other community activities.
    She served several terms on the Vestry at St. Peter’s, including one term as senior warden.
    She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathleen Massey-Shupe; her brother, Dr. Walter Geiger; her husband, Bernie Ingwersen; and her parents, Walter and Josephine Geiger.
    She is suvived by her son, Brian Massey, and his fiance, Adriana Volpe, of Sitka; Brian’s two children, Allison Massey of Sitka and Walter Massey of Anchorage; daughter Denise Massey of Everett, Washington; and stepson Lowell Ingwersen, his wife Melodie, and children John, Veronika and Melinda, of Columbia, South Carolina.
    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

March 1975

Police Blotter: Preston Williams reported $6 worth of gas was stolen from his vehicle while it was parked at the Kiksadi. Paul Garwood said two tires on the KSA-TV van were slashed while the truck was parked at the Hobby House. George Reid, Arrowhead Trailer Court said guns, steamer trunks and decanters valued at $1,500 were stolen by burglars. A telephone was reported detached from the booth next to the post office.
