Esperanza Julian Sumauang

Services for Esperanza Julian Sumauang will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church.

Following interment, a reception will be held at the church’s Corrigan Hall. A viewing will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. tonight at Prewitt’s Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sumauang, 93, died Nov. 1 at Sitka Community Hospital.

She was born Feb. 22, 1921, in Sta. Ignacia, Tarlac Philippines, the seventh of 11 children of Julia and Honoria Asencio Sumauang.

She married Enerio N. Sumauang on Nov. 18, 1962, and moved to Sitka in 1967.  After her husband’s health began to fail, they returned to the Philippines in 1976. He died Nov. 29, 1979, and she returned to Sitka in 1993 to be with her sister and her son and his family. She was residing at the Pioneers Home at the time of her death.

She was a gentle, kind and caring woman, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and other family members.

She liked gardening, knitting and cooking. She picked berries, dug for clams, and loved fishing off the docks.

She will be greatly missed, her family said.

She is survived by her son Emy and daughter-in-law Tammy Sumauang; grandchildren Brody, Jaren, Kyler and Santanna; and sister Maggie Julian Sapinoro, all of Sitka.

Her nephews are Ray (Tatum) Sapinoro of Austin, Texas; Ron (Isabel) Nicolas, of Sitka; Dan (Suzy) Nicolas, Sitka; Eduardo (Remy) Nicolas, Anchorage; Joel (Mykel) Nicolas of Washington; Edwin (Celia) Dumag of Sitka; Junior (Kathy) Dumag, Sitka; Edward (Joy) Dumag, Sitka; and Edmund (Adora) Dumag, Sitka.

Her nieces are Jennet (Darius) Calugay of Seattle; Anita (Phil) Ellison of Washington; Lily (Mike) Nalam, Dutch Harbor; Catalina (Darrel) Thomas, of Florida; Lisa (Jacob) Hodges of Sitka and Mary (Willy) Schmidt of Germany; and numerous other nieces and nephews worldwide.

Pallbearers will be Edwin Dumag, Junior Dumag, Edward Dumag, Joe Vidad, Mark Vidad, Brody Sumauang, Jaren Sumauang and Salvador Agne.

Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.

The freshmen students initiation will be Friday at the school. Dress will be respectable. ... Suspension of three days will be enforced for any of the following violations: throwing of eggs; spraying of shaving cream; cutting of hair; and any pranks which could be harmful to the welfare of the students.
