Harvey Davis
Dies at 79 in
Washington
Former Sitka fisherman Harvey W. Davis passed away March 23 at the Longview, Washington, Hospice Center. He was 79.
This was a peaceful conclusion to a rich and joyous life.
Harvey was born Nov. 16, 1935, in Washington, D.C., the son of Joseph Harry Davis and Marguerite (Sherwood) Davis.
In 1954, Harvey married the love of his life Mary Lou Sunde, whom he had met while stationed in the U.S. Coast Guard in Sitka. They had three children, Cindy, Donald and Deanna.
Harvey and Mary Lou celebrated 60 years of marriage last December.
Harvey loved Southeast Alaska. He worked as a bartender and longshoreman, and realized his dream of becoming a commercial fisherman. He had the fishing boats Miss Dee Dee and the Majestic, which he fished for many years out of Sitka. He also loved to hunt and trap while in Alaska.
In 1982 Harvey moved his family to Oregon where he had a successful shoe repair and leather business. He loved the horse track and became involved in the horse racing business at Portland Meadows, where he forged many long-lasting friendships.
He also became well-known for his fishing skills on the Columbia River – he never lost his passion for fishing or adventure.
Harvey’s son Donald preceded him in death, in Sitka.
He is survived by his wife Mary Lou, of Columbia City, Oregon; daughters Cindy Davis of Waikoloa, Hawaii, and Deanna Cunningham of St. Helens, Oregon; and his beloved grandson Cody Cunningham.
He also is survived by his sister Marguerite Palmer of Charleston, S.C.; brothers Joe Davis of Seal Beach, Calif., and Brian Davis of Virginia Beach, Va.; sister-in-law Dorothy Parshall of Seattle; and by his many nieces and nephews and by a host of lifelong friends and his beloved cat Red.
