Memorial services for former Sitka resident Roberta Lee (Mattin) Johnson, have been scheduled 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, at the First Christian Church in Nampa, Idaho.

Roberta passed away peacefully at home in the presence of her loved ones on May 9, 2015, in Nampa, at the age of 65.

She was born June 22, 1949, in Eugene, Ore., the daughter of Earl and Dorothy Mattin. She graduated from Roseburg High School in 1967 and earned an associate in arts degree from Sheldon Jackson College in 1970.  

Roberta worked as an elementary education paraprofessional and church administrative assistant throughout her career in Sitka and Nampa. She had a passion for caring for children, and did so throughout her life, including in her professional work, church work, and with family.

Roberta had a heart for church work and providing leadership for Sunday schools, Bible schools, and women’s fellowship groups.

Roberta married Andrew Johnson on Sept. 20, 2003, in Sitka. Roberta loved to cook for her family and bake pies for her loving husband, Andy. Throughout their time together they enjoyed family, camping, and watching Monday night football with long-time friends and family, Mary and Dick Goff.

She was preceded in death by her father Earl Mattin, sister Erline (Mattin) Kohler, and niece Rita (Peterson) Marks.

She is survived by her husband, Andrew Johnson; mother, Dorothy Mattin; sister, Charlene Peterson; brother-in-law, Greg Peterson; stepdaughters, Susanne and Meghan Johnson; grandchildren, Rebecca and Ryan Schwider; and multiple nieces, a nephew, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

 

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First Christian Church Disciples Women in Nampa, Idaho.

 

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
