A celebration of life for Calvin Dean Carlson Sr., devoted and beloved father, grandfather, husband and friend, is scheduled 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015, at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi. A reception will follow.
Calvin was born May 21, 1942, in Portland, Oregon, and died Nov. 1 in Sitka at the age of 73. His parents were August Carlson and Ruby (Stoner) Carlson.
He attended Sitka schools, and served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1969 in both Korea and Vietnam.
The longtime Sitka resident was a shipwright, commercial fisherman, and millwright at Alaska Lumber and Pulp, He had a long commercial fishing career and seined, longlined and trolled on many boats. Calvin ran the Alice H for many years and owned and fished his boats, the Cheryl and the Donna Joy.
Cal will be missed by many, and remembered fondly as a great father, grandfather, husband and friend.
His hobbies included fishing, hunting, cribbage, pool league, ping-pong, animals and football – his favorite team was the Raiders.
He was a member of Sitka Elks Lodge 1662 and the American Legion. He was proud of being adopted into the Raven L’uknax.adi Coho Clan. His Tlingit name was Kaalth deodooeesh.
Calvin was preceded in death by his mother and father; wife Marilyn Carlson; son Calvin Carlson Jr.; brother Charles Carlson; sister Freda Samuelson; sister Marie ‘‘Honey’’ Carlson; honorary brother Sonny Enloe; nephew Charles ‘‘Chop’’ Samuelson; and nephew Walter Samuelson.
Survivors include his wife Margaret Carlson of Sitka; daughters Heidi Steen (Jason) of Portland, Ore., Dayna Arnold (Josh) of Sitka and Anne Davis (Cullen) of Sitka; stepdaughters Chelsea Peterson and Kayla Peterson of Sitka; grandsons Brandal Arnold, Lucas Arnold and Chance Davis of Sitka; granddaughters Sydney Davis of Sitka, Tennison Steen and Ava Steen, both of Portland; sisters Karen Wallace (John) of Ketchikan and Dawna Fischler of Seattle; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by honorary brothers Charlie Skultka, Dave Coleman, Greg Martin, Scotty Cassedy, Bruce ‘‘The Hobo’’ Cady, David Kelly, Don Cravens and Dave Cravens.
Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers are Charlie Skultka Sr., Charlie Skultka Jr., Greg Martin, Scott Cassedy, Bruce Cady, David Kelly, Josh Arnold, Cullen Davis, David Coleman, Ernie Karras, Charlie Lang, Ed Young, Herman Davis, John Williams, Bobby Kirkman, Dennis Hicks and John ‘‘John’’ Samuelson.
