Joan McKnight
Dies at Age 54
Joan Lyn McKnight was born on Oct. 27, 1961, in Lynwood, Wash., the daughter of Marion and Anita (Langstraat) Jongeneel. She was the youngest of five children.
Joan’s family commented that she was fearless in her ability to experience everything this life could offer. She never played it safe, and it had to be real. She also was an amazing advocate for those who could not do for themselves.
She had been a resident of Sitka since 2012, and you might have been her riding her bicycle on the streets of Sitka, and working as a cook at the Homeport Eatery.
Joan enjoyed the friendship of a small women’s group, and attended the Assembly of God Church.
Joan was preceded in death by two sons, Derek and James Carlberg; a sister, Jill; and a brother, Greg Jongeneel.
Those survivors who mourn her loss are her mother, Anita Ford of Everett, Wash.; her son Justin Carlbert and his father, Dan Carlberg (Joan’s former husband), both of Snohomish, Wash.; two brothers, Michael and David Jongeneel; and aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends.
After a failed hip replacement in November 2014, Joan had another surgery at Swedish Hospital on November 13, 2015. Three days later she was released and died in her sleep at the home of her former husband on November 17, while cuddling her precious dog, Mr. Wilson.
