URBAN BIRDING - Avid birder Lucy Phillips uses binoculars to view a western screech owl resting on the ledge above the entrance to the Lutheran Church on Lincoln Street this morning. Phillips said the western screech owl, which has a range from southeast Alaska to western Mexico, is fairly common in Sitka and is identifiable, even if unseen, by its repeated hoots in a “bouncing-ball” rhythm.
