Members of the senior class will enter to ‘‘Pomp and Circumstance,’’ played by the school’s symphonic band. Dr. PJ Ford Slack, the school’s principal, will welcome the audience and introduce speakers.
J. Bodin de Boismortier’s ‘‘Sonata 12’’ will be performed by T.J. Agne and George Jones.
Most Representative Girl Samantha Sparks and Most Representative Boy T.J. Agne will speak. The two were chosen by a committee of teachers and principals.
Lon Garrison, Sitka School Board president, will present co-valedictorians Richard Bekeris, Maggie Dunlap, Ruby Gale, Esther (Alaire) Hughey, Mikalai Potrzuski and Jacob Reid; and co-salutatorians Muriel Sadleir Hart and Nicholas (Niko) Friedman.
A video presentation of the classmates will be followed by a speech by Senior Class Representative Soren White. He was chosen by his classmates to represent them. ‘‘Mass’’ from ‘‘La Fiesta Mexicana’’ by H. Owen will be played by the symphonic band.
Charlie Robison, SHS assistant principal, will be guest speaker, and Ford Slack will present the class.
Diplomas will be awarded by Sitka School Board members Lon Garrison, Cass Pook, Tim Fulton, Tom Conley and Tonia Rioux, and Sitka School District Superintendent Steve Bradshaw, Principal PJ Ford Slack, Vice Principal Robison and Darryl Rehkopf, registrar.
The symphonic band will play the recessional, ‘‘Flourish for Wind Band.’’
School Service Award recipients are T.J. Agne, Richard Bekeris, Gus Bruhl, Anthony Buchholz, Jomarc Dasalla, Ruby Gale, Alaire Hughey, Bethany Lowrance, Hannah Palof and Muriel Sadleir Hart. Those receiving Principal’s Awards are T.J. Agne, Shamil Blaisdell, Gus Bruhl, Maggie Dunlap, Johanna Gluth, Jonathan Hazel, Hunter Huddlestun, Joe Joseph, Hannah Palof and Nels Svenson.
Class officers are President Muriel Sadleir Hart and Vice President Jacob Reid. Associated Student Body officers are: President Ruby Gale;, Vice President Nicole Seehafer; Secretary/Treasurer T.J. Agne; George Jones and Sam Woolsey, publicity managers; and Dazlymar Rodrigo and Katina Wathen, housing and transportation.
Senior class advisers are Stefanie Ask, Janine Jorgenson, Ariel Coleman, E.J. Treadway and Jeremy Strong.
Class members chose ‘‘Even the Mayans Saw Us Coming’’ as their motto and the poppy as the class flower.

School Service Award
Richard Bekeris has been named co-valedictorian of his class and received the School Service Award.
He served as student body parliamentarian and junior class secretary/treasurer. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Community Youth Orchestra. He is also a member of both the track and field and swim teams.
He received Commonwealth Honors College admission at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a $10,000- a-year Chancellor’s Scholarship. He plans to study biochemistry and molecular biology.
He is the son of Mikolas and Karoline Bekeris.
Maggie Dunlap

Principal’s Award
Maggie Dunlap has been named Co-Valedictorian of her class and received the Principal’s Award.
She plans to possibly study marine biology at Brigham Young University in Hawaii.
She is a member of the National Honor Society, swimming and track teams, softball manager, the Anti-Bullying Committee, and she traveled to Guatemala with Spanish 4 students. She is editor of the yearbook and works at Sitka Sound Ocean Adventures.
She is the daughter of John and Alison Dunlap.
Ruby Gale
Co-Valedictorian
School Service Award
Ruby Gale has been named Co-Valedictorian of her class and received the School Service Award.
She is a member of the National Honor Society. She was on the soccer team for two years, four years on student council including ASB president, member of Sitka Studio of Dance for 13 years and Fireweed Dance Theatre for five years, eight-year band member, trumpet mentor with Keet Gooshi Heen, and performed in ‘‘The Nutcracker’’ for five years and was a Fireweed Fairy soloist this year. She was Student of the Month.
Ruby received a $46,000 WUE to attend the University of Montana to study pharmacy.
She is the daughter of Chris and Traci Gale.
Alaire Hughey
Co-Valedictorian
School Service Award
Alaire Hughey has been named Co-Valedictorian of her class and received the School Service Award.
She accepted and deferred a year at Linfield College, Oregon, to volunteer on the coast of Ecuador. She will be an assistant teacher for about three months and then work in a daycare facility for three to four months. She plans to study sociology and cultural anthropology at Linfield, where she received the RC Hill Trust Scholarship.
At Sitka High she was a 2009 state champion in solo acting and third place in duo acting in Drama, Debate, and Forensics; 2010 region champion in triple jump, 2010 third in state for triple jump, 2011 region champion in long jump and second in high jump and triple jump; three-year National Honor Society member and vice president this year; 2012 state runner-up for duo in DDF; and 2012 member of three-time state champion debate team.
She received the Medveji Scholarship.
She is the daughter of Randy and Carol Hughey.
Mikalai Potrzuski
Co-Valedictorian
Mikalai Potrzuski is Co-Valedictorian of his class.
He is a three-time all-conference basketball player, and was on the second team all-state his senior year and all-tournament team at state tournament senior year; and played four years of varsity baseball, on all-conference team freshman year. He is a National Honor Society member.
He received an academic and basketball scholarship to attend Central Methodist University.
He is the son of Carol and Bob Potrzuski.
Jacob Reid
Co-Valedictorian
Jacob Reid is Co-Valedictorian of his class.
He plans to study pre-med and/or biomedical engineering at the University of Rochester.
He is a member of the high school swim team, serving as captain in 2011. The team was region champions in 2011. He was 2011 ASAA state runner-up in the 100-breaststroke and 100-freestyle, and second place team at state.
He served as senior class vice president, SEAK club swimmer, National Honor Society member, Sitka High School track and field team 2010. He worked for Swim America and at the BackDoor Cafe. He is a member of the National Honor Society.
Reid earned the $30,000 academic scholarship from University of Rochester where he will be a member of the swim team.
He is the son of Jill and John Reid.
Niko Friedman
Co-Salutatorian
Niko Friedman has been named Co-Salutatorian of his class.
He plans to study mechanical engineering at Montana State University in the fall. He received a BP Scholarship.
During high school he was on the cross-country team, earning third at state; soccer; and National Honor Society.
He is the son of Roland Wirth and Michele Friedman.
Muriel Sadleir Hart

School Service Award
Muriel Sadleir Hart is Co-Salutatorian of her class and earned the School Service Award.
She earned a School Service Award for her work in student government, Sitka Studio of Dance, Cuban salsa, concert choir, vocal jazz, Amnesty International and National Honor Society.
She works at Baranof Chiropractic Scholarships she received include Sitka Elks Lodge, Ocean Wave Quilt Guild, June Nelson Memorial Scholarship, and she is a UA Scholar. Her awards include Outstanding Musician Award at MusicFest 2009, Hugh O’Brian Leadership Conference Certificate of Recognition, the President’s Volunteer Service award, Martin Luther King Jr. Service Award, Spirit of Youth Award, School Service Award, Outstanding Musician Award.
Muriel plans to attend Southern Oregon University in Ashland to study music performance and human rights.
She is the daughter of Thomas Hart and Lisa Sadleir-Hart.
Soren White
Senior Class Representative
Soren White has been named Senior Class Representative by his classmates.
He plans a course of study in pharmacy at Oregon State University.
At Sitka High he was involved in drama, debate and forensics for four years and has gone to state for two years; Mock Trial for two years, including participating in the national Mock Trial Competition this year; and played soccer for three years. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Boy Scouts of America.
He is the son of Dirk and Trish White.
Samantha Sparks
Most Representative Girl
Samantha Sparks was named Most Representative Girl for her participation in JV girls basketball, varsity track and field, and varsity cheerleading where she was all-tournament cheerleader her junior and senior years.
She was awarded the Shee Atika Benefits Trust Scholarship and Sealaska Heritage Scholarship, and plans to study elementary education at Fort Lewis College this fall. She is the daughter of Evan and Kim Sparks.
T.J. Agne
Most Representative Boy
School Service Award
Principal’s Award
T.J. Agne was named Most Representative Boy and earned the School Service Award and Principal’s Award.
He received recognition for his SHS participation, including all-state music for four years, and first chair trombone in 2009; MENC All-Northwest Band; student council for years, including ASB secretary/treasurer junior and senior years; Alaska Society for Technology in Education, 2012 Student of the Year; Southeast Honor Fest for four years; All-Alaska Jazz Band, three years, first chair trombone 2012.
He received a $60,000 President’s Scholarship to attend University of Portland, where he will study computer engineering with a minor in music.
He is the son of Teofilo ‘‘Pilo’’ and Nora Agne.
Gustav Bruhl
School Service Award
Principal’s Award
Gus Bruhl will be attending Gustavus Adolphus College in the fall with a possible course of study in political science, history and Spanish.
His activities at Sitka High include football, soccer, Cuban salsa dancing, MAN choir, vocal jazz, concert choir, drum line, symphonic band, wrestling Drama, Debate and Forensics, and the Anti-Bullying Committee.
His honors include Most Improved for choir, Southeast Honor Choir, Southeast football All-Conference Team, and Senior Hall of Fame ‘‘Most Unforgettable.’’ He has volunteered at the Hames Center, SJ Campus, Chore Busters and has done odd jobs for soccer. He has a certificate of completion for studying Spanish in Guatemala and completion of confirmation at St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church.
He is the son of Sara and Elliott Bruhl.
Anthony Buchholz
School Service Award
Principal’s Award
Anthony Buchholz received awards for his participation in the Leader School Events Committee, a liaison for Challenge Day and SHS at Assembly meetings, and participation in the music department for four years in concert choir and vocal jazz his senior year.
His awards include the Juneau Lions Club Scholarship ($500), SHS Principal’s Award, SHS School Service Award, SHS Music Department Directors Award, Martin Luther King Service Award and Student of the Month.
He plans a general undergraduate degree program course of study at Shoreline Community College, and to continue studies in the marriage and family therapy field.
He is the son of Dan Buchholz and Gigi Buchholz.
Jomarc Dasalla
School Service Award
Jomarc Dasalla was presented with the School Service Award for his dedication to helping other English as a second language students, regardless of nationality. The school said that he is a great leader and role model for that group and that he is a ‘‘go-to’’ person.’’
He is the son of Josephine Dasalla.
Bethany Lowrance
School Service Award
Bethany Lowrance earned a School Service Award for her participation in softball and karate and other organizations.
She earned the Emblem Club scholarship, Sitka Golf Association scholarship and a university scholarship to attend Arizona State University where she will study film production.
She is the daughter of Jon and Mindy Lowrance.
Hannah Alyce Palof
School Service Award
Principal’s Award
Hannah Palof plans to study nursing in the fall at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
At Sitka High, she has been involved in volleyball, Amnesty International, Vocal Jazz and National Honor Society. For the past two years, she has spent an extensive amount of time volunteering at the Sitka Performing Arts Center, working shows such as ‘‘The Nutcracker,’’ Sitka Studio of Dance recitals, Jazzfest and community and school plays. She was selected to the MENC All Northwest treble choir junior year. Since her freshman year, she has received a music leadership award, the Martin Luther King Jr. award, the Principal’s Award, and the Student Service Award.
She is the daughter of Daniel Joseph and Mary Beth Palof.
Shamil Blaisdell
Principal’s Award
Shamil Blaisdell has received a Principal’s Award for his service to the school.
He plans to attend University of Alaska Anchorage to study criminal justice.
He was an MVP at the state hockey tournament and Sitka High School Student of the Month.
He is the son of Dave and Ginger Blaisdell.
Johanna Gluth
Principal’s Award
Johanna Gluth plans to study health science at Eastern Oregon University, LaGrande, in the fall, where she received an academic scholarship and WUE.
She has been involved in volleyball for two years, softball for four years, and a member of the National Honor Society and the Anti-Bullying Committee. She is a licensed CNA.
She is the daughter of Randy and Dawn Gluth.
Jonathan Hazel
Principal’s Award
Jonathan Hazel has been awarded the Principal’s Award for his participation on the soccer team, the Anti-Bullying Committee and Sitka Young Life.
He plans to study mechanical engineering at Boise State University in the fall and is the son of Cathy and Vaughn Hazel.
Hunter Huddlestun
Principal’s Award
Hunter Huddlestun was given the Principal’s Award for her participation in Sitka High activities, including the basketball team, which were runnersup in the state this year, and softball, where she was a member of the 2011 state champion team.
She will attend Lone Star Community College in Woodlands, Texas, in the fall and plans a course of study as a dental hygienist or pharmacist.
She is the daughter of Patti Huddlestun.
Joe Joseph
Principal’s Award
Joe Joseph received the Principal’s Award for his ‘‘patience and perseverance, and for his leadership,’’ the high school said. He plans to participate in Sealaska Celebration 2012 this summer. He will either attend college or seek employment in the fall.
He is the son of Tommy Joseph and Carie Gooley.
Nels Svenson
Principal’s Award
Nels Svenson plans to attend Northern Arizona University in the fall.
He is varsity captain and earned Play of the Game honors in baseball; is an MVP, all-conference offensive line, and varsity captain for football; and was most-improved player and MVP in basketball.
He has participated in Sitka Young Life for 10 years and volunteered at the Swan Lake Senior Center, dance committee, mentor/tutoring, Crossing Bridges, UNICEF, Challenge Day and several fundraisers. He received the Martin Luther King Award.
He is the son of Mike and Kim Svenson.
Dazlymar Rodrigo
Housing Service Award
Dazlymar Rodrigo plans to study elementary education at the University of Alaska Anchorage fall term.
Her high school activities include: boys basketball manager her junior and senior years; housing coordinator; academic team member for Region V Basketball 3A/4A tournament 2012; Outstanding Musician Award 2012 Southeast Music Festival; member of concert choir for four years, vocal jazz for three, and band for one; and drill team, freshman year.
She is the daughter of Zaldy and Marchelle Rodrigo.
Katina Wathen
Housing Service Award
Katina Wathen plans to attend Spokane Community College for two years and transfer to Eastern Washington University where she will study nursing.
She is a four-year varsity basketball player, serving on the All-Conference Team in 2012; played volleyball for two years; a softball team member for three years and was on the state championship team for 2010 and 2011; served in student government as junior and senior class representatives; was involved in the music department; is a vocal jazz accompanist and took lessons from Jammie Wileman for eight years; 2010 Southeast Honor Choir member; and housing coordinator this year.
She is the daughter of John and Marilyn Wathen.
