Pandemic and Sitka
Dear Editor: I am compelled to write about the current pandemic situation, worldwide, but more to Sitka. On the Talk of Alaska radio show Dr. Elliott Bruhl said there are 13 ventilators in Sitka. That may be enough if it is just for Sitka at this moment. What happens when the fishing industry brings 100’s of employees, who have to isolate once they get here, but in the processor plants and boats will be working shoulder-to-shoulder.
Seems like an explosion of COVID-19 opportunity to me. I eat fish almost every day for my health. I would give up fish every day for the immediate and long-term health necessary to keep Sitka safe from this virus. Yes, it makes me nervous. Sitka has been lucky so far – but we are pushing it with a major influx of people to Sitka at this time.
Here’s one possible solution to prevent COVID-19 from arriving in Sitka. Fill those local jobs with local people, Sitkans. If you know you will be unemployed for the summer, there are the jobs right in front of you. If the jobs are taken by locals, no need to import workers.
“Think local, work local, protect your community.’’ Thank you.
Jeff Budd, Sitka
