Stop Signs
Dear Editor: The weather the past few weeks has been amazing! I was so glad to see all the walkers and cyclists out enjoying it. My kids have especially enjoyed zipping around with their friends in our neighborhood.
With all of the tourists coming and school about to be out for the summer I am gently reminding the good folks of Sitka that there are stop signs in every direction at the intersection of Park and Etolin streets. This weekend while working in my yard, I watched several cars blow through that intersection without stopping. There are a lot of kids riding nearby, including mine. Lets all do our part to keep Sitka safe and bike friendly.

Go the Speed Limit
Dear Editor: I am excited for all the people who depend on tourism in our community and wish them a lucrative season. I would also ask the tourism businesses to remind their seasonal employees there are around 9,000 of us who live here full time.
There are so many small things businesses can do to help the town’s population continue our normal lives during this time. An example: request your employees follow the speed limits IN TOWN 24 hours a day, Halibut Point Road 30 miles per hour, HPR and Sawmill Creek Roundabout is 15, as is Katlian Street, the rest of the town is 25, not 33, not 35, definitely not 40 or 45. Everyone runs late sometimes, but no one is late constantly.
I would explicitly request that the heavy vehicle operators slow down; this includes dump trucks, tanker trucks, freight trucks and tour buses. You guys are the professional drivers in our community and by default the leaders of the traffic population.
Thank you in advance for helping us keep Sitka livable for all of us.
