Library Anniversary
Dear Editor: I want to thank all the Sitkans who attended the 100th anniversary celebration of the Sitka Public Library this past Saturday.
Also thank you to those who worked on putting it together, those who performed or served food, or any number of chores that were done.
I did some digging with the help of a few librarians, and here is what I learned: There are five libraries that have been around Alaska for at least 100 years. The five towns that have a library history of over 100 years are: Skagway, Wrangell, Petersburg, Ketchikan and Sitka.
Please note there is more research to do. I can tell you the first Sitka library was started in 1892, and was called a Reading Room, and was located in the Sitka Fire Brigade hall.
There are still a few more events to celebrate our 100th Anniversary. April 8 at 2 p.m., meet in front of the library for a tour of the 13 different places our library has resided. April 20, there is a Library Pub Quiz, at Centennial Hall – more info call me at 747-4821. Last but not least, a Tea for Louise Brightman who served 40 years as a Sitka librarian, location TBA.
Thank you, one and all. Let’s work and hope for a healthy and free library for the next 100 years.
Jeff Budd, Sitka
Happy Easter
Dear Editor: I wanted to write about Easter. We know we’re supposed to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. If we’re supposed to be celebrating the resurrection, then how does the bunny rabbit and colored eggs fit in? And how did we ever get a rabbit to lay eggs of any color?
Is this the devil’s attempt to turn our eyes away from what’s important and take up nonsense?
There’s no way you can say the rabbit is more important than Jesus since it was Jesus who made the rabbit.
Where did the rabbit and colored eggs concept come from anyway?
Happy Easter. Celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. He is worth the praise.
