Barbara Hames
Dear Editor: I was very fortunate to be able to attend Barbara Hames’ 90th birthday party Friday night with several hundred other people who have been blessed to know this amazing lady.
The family didn’t leave anything out with the sock-hop theme, and the entertainers were fabulous.
Barbara and her family have been part of my family since we moved to Sitka 34 years ago.
I can only imagine one of her most prized accomplishments is her family. She and Lloyd raised a family that is kind, loving and successful in their lives, active in the community, support and are involved in the arts, and support healthy living.
Thank you, Barbara, we feel blessed to live in Sitka and know this family.

Thank You, Sitka
Dear Editor: Last weekend, our Boy Scout Troop enjoyed a three-day visit to your wonderful city. This is the ninth time since 1986 I have lead my Scouts to Sitka and other cities of Southeast Alaska. Sitka, and its people, are by far the best.
On behalf of all 29 of us, Scouts and parents alike, we want to thank everyone for making our trip so enjoyable. Everyone was so helpful, and gracious to our Scouts, it made them feel very welcome. I especially want to thank Sitka Lutheran Church, Sitka Tours, Fortress of the Bear, Alaska Raptor Center, Sitka Sound Science Center, John and Allison Dunlap and their guides, Allen Marine, the New Archangel Dancers and everyone in the city for making us feel so welcome.
We hope to see you all again in another four years. Thank you, again.

Sitka Monthly Grind
Dear Editor: The Sitka Monthly Grind just completed its 24th season. As we prepare for the 25th we find that if the Sitka Monthly Grind is to continue, the current producers need help. Our plan is to do a few less grinds per season, October through April. We will continue our philosophy of family-oriented, nonpolitical and affordable entertainment.
To the affordable end we plan to charge everyone $5 who are over age 5, but not reimburse people who bring a homemade dessert. We will continue to give out three first-place prizes (value $15 each). This financial change reflects rising costs, including: an annual accounting/insurance fee to the Greater Sitka Arts Council, whose umbrella we are under, printing tickets $25 a month, rent at $350 to $600 per show, and dessert supplies.
Want to keep the Sitka Monthly Grind alive? We are looking for a few committed volunteers to:
1.) Help move sound equipment at 1:30 p.m. the day of the shows, set up for sound check and the show, then move equipment back to storage about 9:30 p.m.
2.) Learn stage management and/or run the sound board.
3.) Meet briefly once a month to help producers plan future shows. Produce a show yourself – with our help. If you are interested or have questions please let Jeff at 747-4821 or Ted at 747 5482 or email jbudd3500@gmail.com or Ted Howard at jstoh@gci.net.
