Hiring Process

Dear Editor: Things are moving too fast. After dismissing the city administrator quickly, the current Borough Assembly is quickly moving to hire a new administrator. Brief research shows the favorite candidate (7 votes) has been dismissed twice in recent years. The Assembly needs to slow down this process and allow the new Assembly (October/2019) to make the final decision about a new administrator.

The community of Sitka is upset by both actions: (a) The process for firing Keith Brady  (b) The unsettling process (including no HR director to help with the pre-selection process). Let’s slow this process down. This is not working.

We recognize that Assembly members work hard, put in long hours of volunteer time. Precisely the reason that the assistance of an HR director would be helpful in this process.

My hope is that there is a middle ground in this process, that the current Assembly will do some sorting, recruiting of new candidates or perhaps re-sorting of candidates and allow the new Borough Assembly to make the final decision.

Harvey Brandt, Sitka

See House Roof

Dear Editor: The vestry of St. Peter’s by-the Sea Episcopal Church wishes to thank all the individuals who supported our recent salmon lunch fundraiser to raise funds for the emergency See House roof replacement.

The event was such a great success with local community members and visitors coming to have fresh grilled salmon, coleslaw and chips. We were able to raise $2,200 towards the $65,000 cost of the roof with many people giving more than the cost of the lunch. Thank you!

As many locals know, the See House is used by numerous local groups and organizations for meetings, celebrations, trainings and just to get together. Both the See House and church were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and it is important to preserve and protect these community assets.

Once again, thank you for the support of this project.
