Helpers
Dear Editor: Where have all the helpers gone?
We used to see ads in the Sentinel or in the Soup with contact info for them.
Twenty years ago, we had a number of people to fix things and/or help with projects such as cleaning brush off rock walls, washing windows, cleaning chimneys and doing minor repairs. I believe some, looking for higher wages and better benefits, have gone to work for airlines, to SEARHC, or teaching, but no one has taken their places. The older I get, the more I miss those people. I hope they are out there somewhere.

Sleep-Out Thanks
Dear Editor: Here is my “better late than never” thank you to all who contributed in any way to the Sitka Homeless Coalition’s sleep-out that was held the night of Aug. 5 at Totem Square.
It was a night spent in tents and other shelters in the rain to raise money and bring awareness to the issue of homelessness in Sitka. We had around 13 people who braved the several inches of rain that night and raised close to $1,600.
Special thanks to the State of Alaska for allowing us to use Totem Square, right across from the Pioneers Home. Thanks to Rainforest Services for the rental of the porta-potty. Thanks to the local citizens who came out in the rain to hear about our Shelter Sitka project, and to the people who made on-the-spot monetary donations. You are all appreciated more than you can know. For more information check out our website, www.sheltersitka.org.
