Snack Program Thanks
Dear Editor: The Sitka Conservation Society would like to express our gratitude to the Sitka Public Library’s Youth Service’s Program for working with us this summer to put on the “Summer Snack Grab N Go Program.” We were very happy to be able to help with this program, which provided healthy snacks to children, ’tweens and teens. Snack bags, along with library materials and activities, were distributed every Thursday by Youth Services Librarian Maite Lorente and Jesuit Volunteer Jill Hayden. Maite initiated and developed the program, which received financial support from Sitka Conservation Society membership and donors and the Jesuit Volunteers Corps Northwest Program.
The Sitka Public Library has a long history in our community, built by committed, creative and visionary Sitkans. In addition to providing access to printed and audio resources, it has become a center of community activity for people of all ages, and the programs that Maite Lorente has created for youth of all ages is an important part of that, an investment in our community’s future. She keeps youths involved year -round in creative and fun activities even with the difficult logistics during this pandemic. The Grab N Go snacks is just one important part of one of her programs.
We are lucky to have a place like the Sitka Public Library bringing people together, a catalyst for building a stronger and more connected community, and we are extremely grateful to have such a talented person leading the youth program. Sitka Conservation Society was happy to work with the library this summer. Thank you, Sitka Public Library, for the space to put on this program.
