Dear Editor: I am writing to encourage thoughtful consideration of the City and Borough of Sitka’s ongoing efforts to manage cruise ship tourism. For over two years, the CBS – through the work of the Assembly, the Tourism Task Force, and now the Tourism Commission – has been actively addressing the challenges associated with increasing visitor numbers.
This collaborative process has already led to meaningful progress. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with Sitka Docking Company to implement solutions that include designated “quiet days” and future limits on daily passenger volumes. In addition, the development of Sitka’s Tourism Best Management Practices is underway, focused on reducing congestion and improving the overall management of tourism in our community.
I believe this locally driven, cooperative approach is the most effective and sustainable path forward. However, I am deeply concerned about the ballot initiative currently under consideration. Its more aggressive stance risks undermining the progress we’ve made and could have unintended negative consequences for our local economy and community spirit.
Let’s continue working together – residents, businesses, and city leaders alike – to shape a balanced and thoughtful future for tourism in Sitka, one that reflects both our values and our vision for long-term prosperity. I urge voters to vote against the initiative.
Sitka Economic Development Association’s mission is to strengthen Sitka’s economy by supporting existing businesses, attracting and nurturing new businesses, and promoting a business climate that is receptive and conducive to economic growth, while also fostering a high quality of life for Sitkans. Proposition 1 goes against all the principles of our organization, please Vote No on 1.
