Hames Donation

Dear Editor: Brave Heart Volunteers would like to publicly thank Sea Mart and the Hames family for their recent donation of $5,000 in-store credit.

For many years now, they have provided for BHV in this way, and we feel tremendously fortunate to have their steadfast support.

Because of their generosity, BHV is able to provide meals, refreshments, flowers, and other supplies at our important events, including grief support groups, educational gatherings, volunteer trainings, care receiver get-togethers, appreciation dinners, fundraisers, and more. We also use the funds to purchase cleaning supplies, paper goods, and other necessities for our office.

Thank you, again, to Sea Mart and the Hames family! Their continual kindness to BHV is one more beautiful example of how deeply they care for the members of our community.

Dating Violence

Dear Editor: February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Many adults may not recognize signs of an unhealthy teen relationship, despite the prevalence of dating violence.

Before they become adults, 1 in 3 teens in the U.S. will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse by someone they are in a romantic relationship with. It’s important to support the teens you know that are in relationships and to recognize the characteristics of abusive relationships, which can include physical harm, isolation, insulting or manipulating, and controlling what they do, wear, or who they talk to.

If you see these characteristics in a friend or family member’s relationship, the best thing to do is to listen to them, acknowledge their feelings, and provide them with helpful resources. Some available resources are loveisrespect.org/supporting-others-dating-abuse and Sitkans Against Family Violence (907-747-3370).

This message is brought to you by the Sitka Youth Leadership Committee, who encourages you to support teens to develop healthy relationships. To contact any member of this group, please call Emma at 907-474-3489.
