Stand for Democracy

Dear Editor: My compliments to you for your editorial on Jan. 7 and Mr. Harvey Brandt’s comments at the recent Assembly meeting. Well done. I do have some comments of my own.

As appalling and self-serving as the president has been these five years, his nefarious attack on democracy via the storming and attempted sacking of the Capitol highlights the pit of depravity he is living in. His seduction of a segment of the American people to commit such a shameful act shows just how far he is detached from reality.

Courts around the country rejected him 64 times in his attempt to wrest the legitimate election away from President-elect Biden. He now resorts to violence in an attempt to shred the Constitution and ensconce himself on a throne. Apparently he has citizens willing to do his bidding.

We are now facing a call for armed “peaceful” protests (quite the oxymoron) at state capitols. He has set in motion what many of our anti-democratic adversaries could not accomplish after decades of deliberate attempts to destroy our democratic republic.

Leaders form public opinion. It is time for leaders in this country to stand up and be counted by taking a stand against the lying rhetoric we have been subjected to for far too long.  I am asking the City of Sitka Assembly, the State of Alaska’s Governor, our state and national representatives to publicly do the right thing by taking a stand for democracy.

Read the Preamble to the Constitution–that is where your duty lies.

Basketball & COVID

Dear Editor: I love basketball. Sitka loves basketball. The high school season has just started and we have a great schedule with Juneau-Douglas, Thunder Mountain and Ketchikan. All schools are required, for great reason, to have mitigation plans and as long as Sitka is in high alert our kids have fewer opportunities. For our community to enjoy a full season we all need to be responsible.

Basketball season wraps up the end of March. If we continue to trend down we are setting our community up for a great year with more opportunities for our youths, in-person school and an open summer!

Masking, hand washing and distancing make a difference.

Thanks for working together.
