Petition Drive

Dear Editor: The petition reads as follows: ‘‘We, the undersigned Sitka residents, call on the City Assembly and the Sitka Community Hospital board to strongly support the very existence of Sitka Community Hospital, and the prompt reinstatement of our highly skilled, local general surgeon Dr. Richard Wein, to restore the continuity of care.’’ We have received many requests to sign this petition, so we would like to make it available to people to stop over and sign during the next two weeks.

Petitions can be found on the porches of two residences, 224 Katlian (the house next to the Pioneer Bar with the flower boxes), and 405 Verstovia Avenue. The house on Katlian has a short stairway (please use handrail), and the Verstovia house has two stairs. Those who are home-bound or handicapped, and would like to sign, can call Mary at 623-8374, and she will stop by to get your signature.

Many thanks to the Daily Sitka Sentinel for helping us to get the word out.

Karen Lucas, Mary Soltis, Sitka

Card of Thanks

Dear Editor: The family of Lester Davis wishes to thank the people of Sitka for their assistance in our time of need. Our brother, Lester Paul Davis, passed on March 7, 2017.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the following. Prewitt Funeral Home for their professional bereavement support and handling of our brothers remains. Sitka Tribe of Alaska for their support. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, The Staff of the Sitka National Cemetery. The Honor Guard services at the National Cemetery. The Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1 that made the hall available for the traditional services for Lester. Alaska Airlines for carrying his remains and returning them to us. Alaska Marine Highway ferry system that brought our family members to attend the services from other places. A special thanks to Harold Davis, George Bennett and Ron James, whose guidance in Tlingit Traditional ceremonies allowed us to provide our brother with a Native traditional service.

We did make a couple of mistakes in the obituary and memorial card, we left out our sister Lucy Thomas-Duncan B.C., Margaret Osborne-adopted mother, and birthplace was Mount Edgecumbe.

Our heartfelt thanks,

Lester’s Family
