Herring Fishery

Dear Editor: Just a comment on the herring fisheries; researching the internet, there isn’t anywhere near the demand for herring eggs as there was. The market is very soft, so why kill 52 million pounds of herring for no reason.
In the 1970s and ’80s there  were vast schools of herring up and down the West Coast. Now you don’t see any of these schools. All the rockfish, halibut, salmon, seabirds, sea lions and whales eat herring. To save this part of the ecosystem, Fish & Game should cancel this fishing for good. Togiak herring fishery can take care of any herring roe the Asian market needs.
