Haulout Updates
Dear Editor: Thank you for the opportunity to provide information on the Gary Paxton Industrial Park. I am happy to report the City and Borough of Sitka has completed substantial work on the development of a haulout facility at the GPIP.
Most of the work has been on site investigation, research of other haulout facilities in Southeast Alaska, and how a facility at the GPIP would best serve the community and local fleet.
The first set of conceptual designs will be released to the public on June 1 at 2 p.m. at a public meeting in the Centennial Hall. The draft conceptual designs also will be available for viewing on the new website created by the city for all information regarding the development of the haul out.
Information can be found at www.cityofsitka.com/departments/PublicWorks/GPIPHaulOut. Please feel free to submit any comments you have about the haulout project to the comment collector email provided on the page.
The GPIP board of directors is scheduled to meet 3 p.m. June 22 at Centennial Hall to select an official design concept to keep the project moving forward. A timeline for the project can be found at the website. It is an exciting time in the development of GPIP

Path of Hope Park
Dear Editor: On behalf of the Sitka Cancer Survivor Society, we wish to give a huge shoutout and a big thanks to Sarah Lawrie and her awesome Sitka AmeriCorps Volunteers.
On Friday, May 5, they all came geared up with rubber gloves, and ready to scrub the inspirational plaques that line the Path of Hope Park, weed, trim and prune bushes.
This work was all done under the leadership of Sarah Lawrie. Gail Roderick, a SCSS board member, and her husband Lou were there as a big help as well. We also appreciate the Sentinel for placing our spring cleaning picture that day on the front page!
The park looks beautiful and we all hope it can stay that way for a long time. We all need your help to keep the park clean for all to enjoy. Please clean up any litter you may see. Please come and check out this beautiful inspirational park. If you don’t know where the park is located, it is next to Lower Moller Field. We are always happy to take any money donations earmarked for help with any miscellaneous expenses throughout the years.
Thanks, again.

Memorial Bench
Dear Editor: At the end of last year, SAFV’s shelter supervisor, Deanna Moore, tragically passed away. Deanna had a positive impact on the community and touched many people throughout her career. Her loss has been felt deeply by the Sitka community and all staff and clients of SAFV. Deanna’s passion for helping others to discover a safer and healthier path is part of her legacy.
Inspired by Deanna’s family, SAFV and the Sitka Rotary Club are partnering to have a yellow cedar bench commissioned. The bench will be placed at SAFV outside of the shelter in Deanna’s honor. The bench will be designed and crafted by local craftsman Zach LaPerriere from yellow cedar salvaged from the Tongass National Forest, and will include a brass hummingbird inlay created by Alaska Native artist Mary Goddard.
We need your support in helping us reach our goal of $5,000 for this project. Your donation will ensure that future shelter residents and staff will be inspired by Deanna’s example.
