Thank You, Veterans

Dear Editor: Tomorrow is Veterans Day and I would like to thank all of our veterans.

As the daughter of a disabled veteran, I saw the effects of my dad’s service in the Korean War every day of my life. Now, as a PT, I have worked with many veterans over the years who are dealing with physical and mental issues from their years of service. They sacrificed a lot.

Please remember the veterans in your life and in our community tomorrow.

Education Week

Dear Editor: Many people attribute their success to someone who believed in them, or valued them. Often it was a teacher, paraprofessional, a bus driver, a school nurse, a cafeteria worker, a janitor, or playground supervisor who noticed us, called us by name, listened to us, or inspired us to be the best person we could be. We knew someone cared about us. November 13-19 is a week to appreciate the people who work in our schools.

American Education Week provides us an opportunity to celebrate public education and the teachers and staff who make a difference in the lives of our children every day.

On the national level, each day has a theme:

–Monday is kick-off.

–Tuesday is invite parents to school day.

–Wednesday is Educational Support Staff Day.

–Thursday is Educator for a Day.

–Friday is Substitute Educators Day.

This is a great time to appreciate your child’s education. Ask your child what they like about school, the people who show they care, help them, or inspire them. Ask your child if there is someone in the school he/she would like to write a note to, saying thank you.

Sitka’s Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a group of key women educators who offer mini grants or scholarships and are available to help, we support all the people who work in our schools and say THANK YOU for your commitment and dedication.

On behalf of DKG

Katheryn Winslow, Iota president

Stardust Ball

Dear Editor: Thank you all for coming to this year’s Stardust Ball! You may be excitedly planning your favorite winter holiday decorations now – but we’d like to reflect on that moment of brilliant energy and creativity.

Stardust Ball this year was the product of a partnership between Raven Radio and the Ramshackle Cabaret, our first collaborative effort. We applied our collective imagination, skills, and strengths to make the night a memorable one, after several years of pandemic cancellations. The room felt electrified with your energy, and we loved seeing your costumes. To everyone who participated in the lip sync and costume contest: thank you for sharing your talent and creativity!

We have some folks to thank for their part in making Stardust Ball amazing. Our whole community owes a debt of gratitude to the staff at Harrigan Centennial Hall, past and present. They are committed to providing Sitka a welcoming public space, and worked hard behind the scenes to do so. There were others who generously gave of their time: Bobbi Jordan took spectacular pictures of the event, and Elle Campbell supplied a dynamic lightshow. We appreciate Old Harbor Books for their ongoing support around ticket sales. Sitka Tours helped us move the band around. Thanks to the Sitka Police Department for taking part in keeping everyone safe.

Our working partnerships made this event possible: thanks to The Nugget, Northern Pro Audio, Enoki Eatery, Jessie’s Uptown Dawgs, the Ferricks, Jet Steam Carpet Cleaning, Aspen Suites, the Sitka Sentinel, and Rebecca Dannon (she did our graphics.)

This event was sponsored by AKO Farms and Harbor Mountain Brewing Company. They agreed with us that Sitka needed a really great dress-up party for adults, and we appreciate their support. Eldridge Gravy and the Court Supreme came up to make their third appearance, and they ended up bringing down the house.

Stardust Ball is only great because of the many volunteers and staff working together to make it happen. That list is far too long to include here. If we’re talking about you: thank you for all your help.

Thank you for coming to the Stardust Ball this year, everyone!

Becky Meiers, GM Raven Radio, Christian Litten, Creative Director, Ramshackle Cabaret
