St. Michael’s Funding

Dear Editor: With the fundraiser for St. Michael’s in full swing, this would be an appropriate time for the Assembly to revisit their decision from December 2017 to not utilize Visitor Enhancement Funds to support maintenance and repair of St. Michael’s.

At that time there was substantial discussion about utilizing public funds for a church, with concerns about separation of church and state. In addition, there was a veiled threat that the city would certainly be sued should funds be authorized for this purpose, both from local citizens and a Wisconsin non-profit organization.

The city attorney offered an opinion that utilization of Visitor Enhancement Funds is a legitimate expenditure. Despite this assurance, the Assembly did not authorize an appropriation.

To be clear, these funds are not taxpayer funds, but fees collected from visitors. To me, a simple question puts this all in context. If St. Michael’s posted a ‘‘No Trespassing – No Photography’’ sign on the building, would that have a negative impact on our tourist industry? I believe it would.

As such, I think it’s a bit hypocritical to promote this facility as a key tourist attraction and yet deny funds to maintain it. Especially since these fees are collected solely to improve the visitor experience. Please contact your Assembly members to support reconsideration of this issue.

Ben Franklin Store

Dear Editor: When Ben Franklin closed its doors for the last time on Saturday I know I was not the only one who was profoundly sad.

As the owner of a sewing business, I frequented the stove several times a week. The staff were always friendly and helpful. If they didn’t have an item I needed they would go out of their way to get it. They’d periodically ask me what kinds of supplies I needed and, if possible, add them to their inventory. They helped me problem-solve on many projects. Customer service throughout the store was exemplary.

Thank you to Linda, Steve and staff for the many years of service to our community. I wish you all the best in your retirement.
