Thank You, Lisa

Dear Editor: On July 28, Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s office emailed the Hit’xi Saani (Little Houses) project administrator Lenise Hendersen, from the Professional Development company, with some fantastic news – the U.S. Senate approved $1,000,000 for the construction of the cabin community project in Sitka.

Sen. Murkowski ranked the Sitka Homeless Coalition request as a high priority, so out of the 55 submissions, it became one of the 19 Alaskan projects selected by the Senate T-HUD subcommittee to move forward. This thrilling announcement was made possible by our senior senator’s skill, her outstanding staff, and a great deal of support from folks right here in Sitka.

Last month, several SHC supporters got to personally thank Sen. Murkowski when she was visiting Sitka on Aug. 12. It was amazing to hear her bring up the success of the Shelter Sitka campaign that happened last year and showed that our town was serious about ending homelessness.

Thanks to Lisa’s seniority on the Senate Appropriations Committee, she was able to deliver significant solutions and investments for projects across our state.

Thank you to everyone who has donated time and money to that initial fundraiser. Our goal was locally raising $20,000 in a month, but generous Sitkans contributed well over four times that amount. Since “ending homelessness” by building the cabins at the top of Jarvis Street became a community goal at the 13th annual Sitka Health Summit Planning Day in September of 2021, hundreds of locals have contributed time, money, and support to realize this dream.

Thank you, Sen. Murkowski, and thank you, Sitka. Together we will end homelessness in our caring community.
