Beach Cleanup
Dear Editor: We are five AFS international high school exchange students spending an academic year in Sitka and Juneau.
During Sept. 9-11, we went to Brent’s Beach Cabin for our arrival orientation meeting. One of our activities was to learn about the economic and environmental consequences of marine debris. We walked nearby beaches and collected eight large bags of trash and returned them to Sitka for proper disposal.
Please think about the next time you go hiking or camping and are enjoying your beautiful place. Bring an extra trash bag. If you stay there for a day or more, you can always take 30 minutes to clean up, even if it’s trash you did not leave. It is all of our jobs to do this everywhere, not someone else’s.

Yes to Shipyard
Dear Editor: After spending over $100,000 on my boat in Wrangell last year, the problem of having no shipyard in Sitka was really magnified for me. Sitka has the same skilled labor and suppliers that Wrangell does, we just don’t have a place to do the work. Let’s keep the money in Sitka and support our own economy. Vote for Proposition 2 and build a community shipyard.
