Assembly Vote

Dear Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to write and ask the citizens of Sitka to please vote for my nephew, Benjamin Miyasato, on Oct. 1 at City Hall. Ben is running for Sitka Assembly.

Ben was born and raised in sitka, graduated from Sitka High School in 1982. He joined the Army National Guard and after 20 years of service, Ben retired. He served two tours of duty in Iraq. He has had 20 years in the banking profession and Ben served six years on the Sitka Tribe of Alaska Council and four years on the Sitka Assembly. He did his homework on the issues.

While on the Assembly, Ben supported and voted for keeping the senior citizens tax-exempt status and he voted for the Utility Cost Subsidization Program. This program will help by giving a subsidy to those citizens who qualify and help on your city utility bill. Applications are available at the city hall and the deadline to apply is Oct. 31, 2019.

Please vote for Ben Miyasato. He listens very well.

Harriet Miyasato Moreno Beleal, Sitka

Election Picks

Dear Editor: I believe the social, cultural, and economic health of Sitka depends on well-funded schools. That’s why I’m voting for Kevin Knox and Thor Christianson for city Assembly on Oct. 1.

At this week’s KCAW forum, they were the only candidates to express definitive support for funding Sitka schools to the cap. With prior Assembly experience, Knox and Christianson come prepared to weigh in on the multitude of complicated issues that affect our city. Finally, they have shown an ability to work effectively and respectfully with fellow assembly members.

For School Board, Paul Rioux has a clear vision for helping our district navigate the serious challenges it currently faces, including deep budget cuts at the state level. Along with fresh ideas, he brings many years of experience volunteering for youth-related causes and has children enrolled in the district. Paul has already invested a great deal of time and energy in our schools and would build on that dedication as a school board member. Let’s seize this incredible opportunity.

Sitka’s excellent public schools make our town an attractive place to live and do business. Help them continue to thrive by voting for Kevin Knox, Thor Christianson, and Paul Rioux next Tuesday.
