Peanut Butter Challenge

Dear Editor: Sitka Rotary Club is pleased to announce it raised 704.25 pounds of peanut butter and $1,122 for our local Salvation Army and Sitka Tribe of Alaska food banks in the Peanut Butter Challenge initiated by the Kenai Rotary Club.  Eleven Rotary Clubs participated in this August event.  Of the nine clubs reporting their results so far, a total of 6,126.46 pounds of peanut butter and $7,548.49 of cash donations were raised for each club’s local food banks.

Clubs were challenged to see who could collect the most pounds of peanut butter per club member, with cash donations being converted at a rate of $2.50 = 1 pound of peanut butter.  Based on this conversion, Sitka Rotary Club came in third, with 36.03 pounds of peanut butter per member.  The winning club was the University Place-Fircrest Rotary Club of Tacoma, Washington, which has 31 members, brought in 1,330 pounds of peanut butter, and raised over $2,751 – converting to over 78 pounds per member.  Second place was the Kenai Rotary Club with 64.34 pounds per club member.  The other Rotary Clubs reporting results so far are Anchorage East 30.32 pounds/member; Barrow Nuvuk 18.44 pounds/member; Kruse Way Rotary of Lake Oswego, Oregon, 11.28 pounds/member; Anchorage South 10.61 pounds/member; Anchorage Gateway 3.67 pounds/member; and the Soldotna Rotary Club at 3.38 pounds/member.

Thank you to all who participated in this fun and helpful community event!

White E Remodel

Dear Editor: The White Elephant Board and Volunteers are grateful to several people for their generous donations to our remodeling efforts.

Many thanks to Trish and Dirk White for slat wall panels, shelving and accessories and to Ed Conway for slat wall panels. A special thank you to Mike Litman for donating the chute for our new donations shed and the ramp between floors in the store. We also want to give a big thank you to Spenard Builders Supply for exterior paint,  Shaun Gillespie for the lights in our new donation area, Chris Balovich for the door, and Ben Franklin Store for chrome pipe. Thanks also to Tom Mattingly, board member and volunteer, for his invaluable help in getting the job done. We appreciate these many contributions that have helped to make considerable improvements to the White Elephant Shop.

The shop is now open for business. Come check it out, and please wear a mask.
