Drill Conductor
    Training on Tap
    AMSEA is conducting a one-day fishing vessel drill conductor training course 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Oct. 24. The course meets the U.S. Coast Guard drill conductor requirements for fishing vessels.
    Course instructor Rick Petersen will cover topics including: cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, flares and maydays; man overboard recovery; fire-fighting; immersion suits and PFDs; emergency drills; helicopter rescue; life rafts; and abandon ship procedures.
    The cost is $95 for commercial fishermen (after an $80 scholarship from DCCED and NIOSH) and $175 for all others. All mariners are welcome. The course will be conducted at NSRAA, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road. Registration is available online at www.amsea.org or call 747-3287.

    Parent Power
    Hour at Hames
    Hames Center is offering a Tuesday-Thursday playtime group for children so their parents can exercise.
    The group meets 8:15-9:30 a.m. Oct. 24-Nov. 19. Ages 0-5 will be entertained by qualified volunteer staff in a safe play environment.

    SCDC Meet Canceled
    Sitka Community Development Corporation has canceled its Oct. 24 meeting. It will be rescheduled. For more information call 747-2860.

    ANS to Meet
    Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 4 will meet 6:30 p.m. tonight at the ANB Founders Hall to continue nominations
for new officers and finish up reports from Grand Camp delegates. All members are being encouraged to attend. Call Jean at 623-7355 with questions.

    Park Transitions
    To Winter Hours
    Sitka National Historical Park has transitioned to its winter season operations. The visitor center will be open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday  and will be closed on federal holidays.
    Free tours of the Russian Bishop’s House tours are available Tuesday through Friday by advance reservation and as staffing allows. For more information or to schedule a tour of the Russian Bishop’s House, call 747-0110.
    Park trails are open 7 a.m.-8 p.m. The direct route between Metlakatla Street and Sawmill Creek Road across the Indian River footbridge is open for through-traffic at all times. Cyclists are reminded that bicycles are limited to this direct route and must be walked. A bicycle rack is provided at the visitor center for those wishing to explore the rest of the park on foot.
   
    Story Time Set
    The subject of the 10:30 a.m. Thursday preschool story time at Kettleson Memorial Library is “Rain.”

    Books for Sale
    At Kettleson
    A sizeable collection of books, VHS and DVD films, audiobooks and music CDS remain available for purchase by donation through the week at Kettleson Memorial Library.
    Items were left over from the library’s Alaska Day sale. Proceeds will be used for the library expansion.

    Empty VHS
    Cases Available
    Several boxes of empty VHS cases are available at Kettleson Memorial Library. Potential uses might include wearable art garments or accessories, small narrow wall planters, or an ant farm apartment complex, the library said. All are invited to create something unique to be displayed at the library.
    Boxes are currently located in the vestibule of the Kettleson Memorial Library. For questions call 747-8708.
