Retirement Party
For Glenn Howard
A retirement party for Glenn Howard Jr. is set Jan. 3 at the Sitka Elks Lodge. Dinner will be 6-8 p.m. followed by music and dancing 8 p.m.-midnight.
Howard is retiring from the Sitka Pioneers Home after 25 years of service.
Museum Closed
Sheldon Jackson Museum will be closed Jan. 1 in observance of New Year’s Day. Winter hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will resume Jan. 2.
Discovery Days
At Science Center
The next Sitka Sound Science Center Discovery Days event will be an Aquarium Sleepover Jan. 4.
Kids ages 7-10 and their parents are welcome to attend. Pre-registration is needed for this annual pass-holder event. Contact SSSC to register or for more information at 747-8878.
Masquerade
Ball Jan. 1
Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood are cosponsoring a benefit New Year’s Masquerade Ball for family fun 6 p.m. Jan. 1 at the ANB Founders Hall.
An eclectic variety of dance music will be played, and admission is free; however, a donation jar will be available at the door to contribute toward the final renovation projects at the hall, including finishing the kitchen.
Costumes, whether recognizable or incognito, are being encouraged. A raven and crow call contest, the Haa Gu game, and other traditional ANB/ANS games are planned along with potluck desserts, snacks, and refreshments. For further information call Katherine Howard at 752-3420.
ALFA to Meet,
Discuss Halibut
The Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association will meet 5-7 p.m. Jan. 10 at the Sitka Sound Science Center meeting room to discuss halibut catch limits and proposals.

Photo caption: Mary Lou Colliver presents Sitka Fire Dept. Acting Chief Dave Swearingen a check for $325 to help restore the 1926 Chevrolet fire truck originally purchased by Art Franklin. Colliver donated the money after her business, Colliver Shoes, borrowed the truck to use during Moonlight Madness. The truck is in need of an estimated $20,000 worth of restoration work, Swearingen said.

Sitka Community Hospital Administrator Martin Tirador and hospital board chairman Lawrence Porter told the Assembly Tuesday about the need for a new hospital to replace the existing 18-year-old one. The cost would be about $6.89 million with $2.2 million of that required locally.
