    Open VB Slated
    Adult open volleyball is scheduled 7:30-9:30 p.m. Feb. 11 and 13 at Blatchley Middle School.
    Participants are reminded to carry clean gym shoes to and from the facility. For more information call Sitka Community Schools at 747-8670.

    Sup’t. Finalists
    Open House Set
    Sitka School Board will hold a community meet-and-greet for the two superintendent finalists 5-6:30 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Sitka High School library.
    The two finalists are Eddie Campbell and Mary Wegner.
    The board will interview the candidates 9-11:45 a.m. Feb. 13 in the district office board room. The interviews are open to the public.
    The School Board will have lunch and dinner with the candidates on Feb. 12.

    HB 77 is Topic
    Of Presentation
    The Department of Natural Resource’s Director of Land, Mining and Water Brent Goodrum will join  community members, Sitka Tribe of Alaska, Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association, Alaska Trollers Association and the Chum Trollers Association for a public discussion on House Bill 77  4-6 p.m. Feb. 13 at Homeport Eatery.
    House Bill 77 has implications for salmon streams, subsistence resources, and Alaskans’ rights to comment on state development projects, organizers said. Both Sen. Bert Stedman and Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins have opposed the bill and held it up in the Legislature last session. The bill will make its way onto the Senate floor this legislative session.

    Girl Scouts Set
    Girls Fun Night
    Girl Scout Troop 4140 will host a girls fun night 5-9 p.m. Feb. 15 at KGH.
    A sleepover for girls in second grade and older begins at 9 p.m. following the evening’s activities. The cost is $20 for the evening and $30 for the sleepover. Dinner and snacks are provided.     The event is a fundraiser for the Scout’s trip to the Pacific Northwest in June to volunteer with the Special Olympics and work on a service learning project with the Food Lifeline in Seattle.


    Spring Break Camp
    Information Given
    Parents and grandparents interested in learning more about how their children and grandchildren can participate in Yaa Khusgé Yaaw Woogoo-Knowledge-of-Herring Camp are invited to stop by Sitka National Historical Park’s visitor center 5:30 p.m. Feb. 12.
    Application materials will be available. The camp runs noon-5 p.m. March 17-21. For additional information contact Nancy Douglas at 966-1350.  





    White E Panel Meets
    The White Elephant Shop monthly meeting will be held 7 p.m. Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Swan Lake Senior Center.  Meetings are open to the public.


    Emblem Club Meets
    Sitka Emblem Club 142 will hold its monthly business meeting 7 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Elks Lodge. Members are being urged to attend.


    Piano Students
    Perform Saturday
    Piano students of Jammie Wileman, NCTM, will present an afternoon of piano music at the Sitka Performing Arts Center, 2 p.m. Feb. 15.
    Students are ages 5 and up. The public is invited to the recital. A donation of $1 each is requested. Call Wileman with questions at 747-5764.


     Chamber to Meet
    Michael Brown, a partner in Burlington Associates in Community Development, will speak on community land trusts at the Sitka Chamber of Commerce luncheon noon Wednesday at Westmark Sitka.
    Michael will discuss community land trusts and how they operate, as well as the CLT initiative currently being planned by the Sitka Community Development Corporation.

    Chinese Lantern
    Festival Saturday
    The Sitka Chinese Lantern Festival will be 2 p.m. Feb. 15 at Centennial Hall. The day will start with a parade at 1:30 p.m. with line-up at 1 p.m. at Totem Square.
    Crafts, games, dragon dances, traditional performances, and a Chinese potluck and jiaozi-dumplings are planned at Centennial Hall.
    Organizers said that props are available to those who do not have any and wish to join the parade. The festival will also involve a lantern contest. Individuals are invited to take a homemade lantern to Centennial Hall at 10 a.m. on  Feb. 15 for the contest. Prizes will be given at 5:30 p.m. to the top three lanterns.
