    CG Academy Prof in Sitka
    As Marine Science Fellow
    The Sitka Sound Science Center today welcomed Dr. Lucy Vlietstra, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, as a scientist in residency fellow.
    Vlietstra will be in Sitka for a month developing an internship program for future marine biology students at the Coast Guard Academy to participate in field research projects in Sitka.
    Vlietstra is associate professor at the academy. In 2003, she received her doctorate degree in marine ecology from the University of California-Irvine after completing an undergraduate program at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and graduate work at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Syracuse.
    She served as a postdoctoral teaching fellow at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy before taking a faculty position at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. In 2009, she returned to the academy, where she teaches courses in marine ecology, atmospheric and marine sciences, and coral reef ecology.
    Vlietstra conducts collaborative research in the field of marine ecology and conservation. Her research explores changes in the physical marine environment caused by human activities and associated impacts on marine consumers and their food webs.
    Most recently, she has conducted studies addressing environmental considerations in coastal and offshore wind energy development, climate-related shifts in the ecology of gelatinous consumers native to New England estuaries, and habitat use by demersal fishes of conservation interest in estuaries on Long Island Sound.
    Vlietstra will be the guest on the KCAW morning interview program at 8:15 on June 5 and will give a presentation for the Natural History Seminar Series 7:30 p.m. June 11 titled: ‘‘Wind Turbines and Birds: Maximizing the Environmental Benefits of Marine Renewable Energy.’’
    Support for the Scientist in Residency Fellowship comes from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the National Science Foundation.

    SCDC to Meet
    Sitka Community Development Corporation will meet 7-9 p.m. June  4 at the Pioneers Home Manager’s House.
    SCDC is a community supported non-profit working to establish permanently affordable housing in Sitka. Members of the public are being encouraged to attend. For more information call 747-2860.

    Book Sale Slated
    At Stratton Library
    Sitkans are being given a final chance to clean out the Stratton Library before Kettleson Memorial Library moves into the building to use as its temporary home.
    Six to seven shelves of older books, many bound, will be made available for free 4-6 p.m. Thursday, June 5.
    Topics range from Biblical history to literature and geography.
    On Friday, June 6, two- and four-drawer uprights as well as several lateral file cabinets, tables, some older chairs, desks (including a steel case one) and other miscellaneous items will be available on the back loading dock of the library and are free to anyone to pick up.

    Derby Incentive
    Prizes Listed
    The incentive contest hidden weights have been announced for the final weekend of the Sitka Salmon Derby.
     Hidden weights were 32.4 pounds for May 31 and 56.5 pounds for June 1. Computer-drawn random target weights revealed last week were 29.6 pounds for May 24, 43.7 pounds for May 25, and 37.7 pounds for May 26 in the 59th annual derby sponsored by Sitka Sportsman’s Association.
    Entry forms are available from the Samson Tug and Barge office at 329 Harbor Drive. Entry forms not previously turned in at the Crescent Harbor weigh-in barge must be received at the Samson office before 5 p.m. on Friday, June 6.
    Contestants may submit an entry form for any day listing weights of one, two or three fish from their catch on that day to come close to the target weight by addition or subtraction. 
    Winners for each day will be determined by closest number to the target weight, either over or under. In case of tied entries for a day, the $500 prize will be divided evenly.
    The intent of Samson and the Baggen family offering the daily prize of $500 was to encourage derby participants to enter all kings caught each day.  Entering up to three fish each day increased the odds of winning. 
    Prizes will be presented on derby awards night, 7 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at Centennial Hall, along with 45 other hidden weight prizes of $50 each from Sitka Sportsman’s Association.
