    Community Art
    Project on Exhibit
    At National Park
    Sitka National Historical Park will begin celebrating the 65th anniversary of Alaska Day with a community art project on exhibit through Oct. 18.
    The park will host the project in commemoration of Alaska Day. Community members and friends of all ages are being invited to the visitor center to add drawings, quotes, poems and other contributions to a mural on the topic of “Why Should We Celebrate Alaska?”
    Art supplies will be provided, and no artistic experience is necessary to participate. The completed mural could illustrate Alaska’s history, cultures, scenery, wildlife, and more – be creative. It will remain on display at the visitor center through Alaska Day, Oct. 18.
    The schedule for Alaska Day at the Russian Bishop’s House include:
    –Russian Bishop’s House open house events are 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2:30-3:30 p.m. All are invited to explore both floors of the restored Russian Bishop’s House free of charge. Rangers will be on site to answer questions about this important relic of Russian American history.
    –A live performance by the SitNiks will be 10:30 a.m.-noon. The SitNiks is an ensemble that plays Russian and East European folk music on traditional and related instruments.
    –A Russian tea service demonstration is 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Hot Russian tea will be served from the samovar and Russian tea cakes will be offered.
    –Children’s games will be played 10 a.m.-1 p.m. All ages are invited to participate in games and activities similar to those played by children during the Russian-American Period. Games will be played on the lawn in front of the Russian Bishop’s House. Parents and other adults are encouraged to attend.

    No Toy Donations
    Effective immediately, the White Elephant Shop no longer accepts toys as donations.

    College, Career
    Fair Wednesday
    The Sitka College and Career Fair is set 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Sitka High School. The community is invited to join. Parents can drop by at any time.

    Elks, Emblem Club
    Set Children’s Party
    Sitka Elks Lodge and Sitka Emblem Club will host the annual children’s Halloween party 2 p.m. Oct. 19 at the lodge.
    Members can sign their children up at the lodge.

    Benefit Dinner
    For Swim  Team
    Sitka High School swim team has scheduled a fundraising prime rib dinner and auction 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, in the SHS commons.
    In addition to a silent auction of items donated by Sitka businesses, swimmers will be auctioned off at the event to perform chores and odd jobs to help raise necessary funds for team expenses and travel.
    Tickets for the event are $30 and are available from SHS swimmers as well as at Silver Basin. To make a donation to the team, contact Ben Adams, 738-9270.

    Math Parent in
    SHS Library
    The Sitka High School math department teachers will offer information about the math program at a parent meeting 6-7 p.m. Oct. 23 in the SHS library.

    White E Shop
    Has Fall Items
    Starting tonight with the 6 to 8 p.m. opening, the White Elephant Shop will have fall and Thanksgiving decor available to purchase.
    More items will be added for Thursday’s opening from noon to 3 p.m. The Whte Elephant Shop will be closed for Alaska Day.
