Turkey Crafts
At Kettleson
Kettleson Library is hosting an afternoon of turkey crafts 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16. Art and craft materials will be provided for children of all ages.
The program is part of the Kettleson @The Stratton Open House Warming. Exhibitions, refreshments and memories will be part of the program. Everybody is welcome. For more information, call Kettleson at 747-8708.
Documentary Film
On Haida Weaver
To Premiere HereArtchange Inc. and the Sitka Film Society will present the local premiere of the film “Tracing Roots,” a documentary by local filmmaker Ellen Frankenstein, 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the downtown Coliseum Theater.
The film follows the journey of Delores Churchill, master weaver and Haida elder, as she tries to understand the origins of a spruce root hat found in a retreating glacier.
Delores Churchill will be in Sitka for this screening, and will answer questions following the 45-minute film. A reception follows at Old Harbor Books.

The deadline to apply for the 2014 Waldo Mills Scholarship from the Sitka Woman’s Club is Nov. 30. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to single mothers engaged in academic or vocational pursuit to become self-sufficient. For more information, call Sheila at 738-3098.

The deadline to apply for the 2014 Waldo Mills Scholarship from the Sitka Woman’s Club is Nov. 30.
Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to single mothers engaged in academic or vocational pursuit to become self-sufficient in supporting her family. Awards may be applied towards tuition for Alaska college courses, vocational training or correspondence courses. Applicants must reside in Sitka, and may be part-time or full-time students.
To apply for the scholarships, write a one-page letter describing your present situation, and stating your educational goals and objectives. Letters should be sent to the Sitka Woman’s Club, 300 Harbor Drive, Sitka, AK 99835. Applications must be received by Nov. 30.
Scholarships will be awarded in early December.

Grand Opening
Set at Kettleson
The Open Housewarming for Kettleson Memorial Library at the Stratton will be held 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, to showcase the library’s home-away-from-home at 831 Lincoln Street.
The event will feature refreshments, crafts, exhibitions of library services and resources, photo opportunities with Bookzilla, the library dinosaur, and a memory book for the Stratton Library.
At 4 p.m. a program will officially thank those who have helped with the library’s move and expansion projects, kick-off KML’s programming for the upcoming year, and celebrate the history of Sheldon Jackson College’s Stratton Library.
Everyone is invited to attend.
Sacred Harp
Sing on Tap
The Second Sunday Sitka Sacred Harp Sing is set 3:30-5 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Pioneers Home chapel.
Beginners and listeners are encouraged to attend. Call 738-2089 for more information.
Library Board
Meets Nov. 5
The Library Commission for the City and Borough of Sitka will meet at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Kettleson Memorial Library’s temporary location in the Stratton Library, 831 Lincoln Street.
Agenda items will include updates on the library expansion project, upcoming library programs and events, and discussion of recent library programming and other news.
Toy Sale Set
At White E
The White Elephant Shop toy sale will be noon-3 p.m. Thursday.
Toys will be in the main store, along with adult snow gear. In the children’s store will be more toys, stuffed animals and snow gear.
Volunteers suggest children do not attend the first day of the toy sale due to the store being overcrowded.
Fetal Alcohol
Support Given
The Fetal Alcohol Community support Group will meet 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Pioneers Home Manager’s House.
Chelsea Dotchak, a young Canadian woman, will speak on how she excelled in school but was unable to manage simple life tasks. Despite her disability, ongoing family support enabled her to realize her desire for a home and family of her own today in Long Island, N.Y.
Anyone who is interested in accommodations that enable children and adults living with fetal alcohol to succeed in life is welcome ot attend.

The Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 4 will meet 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, at the ANB Founders Hall for the third and final nominations for new ANS officers followed by an election.

Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
