Sitka Skippers Set

Garage Sale Nov. 15

The Sitka Skippers will host a garage sale 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 in the Keet Gooshi Heen multipurpose room.

Those who have quality items to donate can contact Susie at 738-9405 or drop them off during set-up on Friday, Nov. 14, between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. 

 

Marine Corps

Dinner on Tap

The Marine Corps League, Robert B. Johnstone Detachment of Sitka, invites active and inactive Marines to the 239th birthday celebration of the U.S. Marine Corps 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, at Agave Restaurant, 236 Lincoln Street.

Marines, former Marines, Marine spouses and their guests are invited. Dinner specials and the regular menu are available.

Attendees are asked to take photographs of travel experiences shared with fellow Leathernecks.

Transportation can be made available with at least one day’s notice, and more information is available, by calling Bernie Gurule at 966-3202 or Nels Lawson at 747-6903.

 

 

Spaghetti Dinner,

Coat Drive Slated

Sitka Girl Scouts will host a spaghetti dinner and dessert auction fundraiser at the Elks Lodge Sunday, Nov. 9, to kick off its third annual coat drive.

Dinner is served 5:30-7:30 p.m., followed by a dessert auction at 6 p.m.

Girl Scout Troop 4140 is accepting donations of clean, gently used coats, boots, hats, gloves and snow pants. Items will be given to the Salvation Army and distributed free to families in need. All sizes are needed.

Girl Scout Troop 4140 is seeking donations for a fundraising garage sale on Saturday, Nov. 8. Call or text 738-2073.

 

Annual Wreath,

Garland Sale Set 

Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool is selling wreaths and garlands for its annual benefit.

Wreaths are $32 with a bow, or $30 without. Garland is $30 for 15 feet or $120 for 75 feet. The cedar garland can be draped around a door or cut to length. Wreaths are made of noble fir, cedar and juniper berries.

Wreaths and garlands will be available for pick-up 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, during Sitka Counseling’s holiday bazaar at Centennial Hall.

Rose Sale Set

For Sitka Rotary

The annual Sitka Rotary Club rose sale will be held Nov. 7-8.

Roses can be purchased 3-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Sea Mart and A/C  Lakeside; and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Wells Fargo Bank lobby and Murray Pacific entryway.

Roses cost $35 for a dozen. Several color choices are available. Those with questions may call 738-2014.

 

Social Security

Seminar Listed

The seminar ‘‘Social Security: Your Questions Answered’’ is scheduled 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at UAS Sitka Campus.

Steven Dalquist of Edward Jones  will cover how Social Security fits into a retirement income plan, when to start taking benefits, and how taxes and benefits are affected. School of Nursing

Information GivenUAS Sitka Campus will host a UAA School of Nursing informational meeting 3:30-5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, in Room 106.

ANB to Meet

Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1 will hold its regular monthly meeting 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at the ANB Founders Hall.

Thanksgiving

Dinner Slated;

Planning Nov. 6

Organizations wanting to be part of the annual Sitka Community Thanksgiving Dinner planning committee are invited to a meeting 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at the ANB Founders Hall.

At the meeting, it will be decided which organization will take the lead and who donations will be made to.

The local chapter of Tlingit and Haida Tribes of Alaska is collaborating with the Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1, Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 4 and Sitka Tribe of Alaska to co-host the annual dinner.

Doors open at 1 p.m. for a social hour on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, at the ANB Founders Hall, followed by a Thanksgiving dinner at 2 p.m.

Women’s Book

Group to Meet

The Women’s Book Group will discuss ‘‘The Aviator’s Wife’’ by Melanie Benjamin and ‘‘Gift from the Sea’’ by Anne Morrow Lindbergh and meet at the Sitka Pioneers Home Chapel 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Story Time Listed

‘‘The Pirate of Kindergarten’’ by George Ella Lyon will be one of the readings during the preschool story time 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at Kettleson Library.

The program will explore disabilities, acceptance, respect and self-image, and it will be coordinated with SAIL. 

 

Preschool story times help to promote early literacy skills, expand children’s vocabularies and broaden and enrich their experiences, stimulating brain development.

 

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
