Alaska Day Panel

To Meet Tuesday

Alaska Day Festival coordinators will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Centennial Hall to review the recent mid-October activities with suggestions for planning the 2015 commemoration of the 1867 purchase transfer of Russian claim in Alaska to the United States at Sitka.

Regular meetings resume in January on the third Tuesday of the month to propose a theme and elect festival leadership.

Persons having comments about festival activities or new volunteers are invited to attend the meetings or contact Chairman Ted Allio at 747-5124, Vice Chair Steve Dalquist 752-0750, Treasurer Ann Wilkinson 747-2707, or Secretary Elaine Strelow 747-3469.  The festival’s mailing address is P.O. ANB to Meet

Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1 will meet 7 p.m. Nov. 24 at the Pioneers Home Chapel.

On the agenda will be persons to be heard and requests for the use of the ANB Founders Hall. Dues may be paid at the meeting, which are $12 per person. Call 738-3470 with questions.

 

Sitkans Can Dance

Event on Saturday

The Sitka Studio of Dance and the Greater Sitka Arts Council will present Sitkans Can Dance 7 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Performing Arts Center. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The program is based on the two popular TV shows: ‘‘Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance.”  The couple dancing is just for the fun of it and the solo dancers will be judged. A Sitka Aerial Silks performance is planned, and the Sitka Studio of Dance will also showcase some of their dancers.

Donations Accepted

The White Elephant is once again accepting quality donations. Donations may be dropped off when the store is open.

 

Chamber to Meet

Jeff Comer, new CEO of Sitka Community Hospital, will address the Chamber of Commerce weekly luncheon noon Wednesday at the Westmark Sitka. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. 

Comer is a veteran healthcare executive with more than 20 years of leadership experience. 

 

JKT Office Hours

State Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins will hold public office hours 9-11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at the Backdoor Cafe and noon-2 p.m. at Highliner Coffee.

Teen Lab Offered

For Music, Audio

Kettleson Memorial Library’s Teen Lab will open 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, to offer a free music and audio production workshop for teens 13 and older.

The Teen Lab mentor for the Nov. 29 workshop will be Joe Montagna. Teens of all skill levels are invited to learn and explore ways to create something new, the library said.

The workshop provides teenagers with access to equipment, software and volunteer artist mentors in an innovative learning environment with the focus on creativity and creation, the library said. Workshops are informal, fun and drop-in friendly, but registration is preferred.

Merrill Photographs

On Display at Park

In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, Sitka National Historical Park is displaying a selection of E.W. Merrill photographs that highlight the region’s rich Native culture.

Merrill, a commercial photographer, captured crisp and striking images of the Native people of Sitka around the turn of the 20th century. These photographs highlight the region’s traditional Native customs, dress and way of life.

The exhibit will be on display through the end of November at the park’s visitor center. Hours of operation are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.  

 

Thanksgiving

Dinner Planned

The annual Sitka Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be 2 p.m. Nov. 27 at the ANB Founders Hall. Doors will open at 1 p.m. for a social hour.

The local chapter of Tlingit and Haida Tribes of Alaska is collaborating with the Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1, Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 4 and the Sitka Tribe of Alaska to co-host the dinner. 

Individuals or organizations wanting to be a part of this year’s planning committee are invited to a meeting 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at the ANB Founders Hall.  

The group will finalize the schedule for the dinner and volunteers. To volunteer or make a donation, contact Rachel Moreno, Tlingit and Haida Sitka Chapter president, at 738-6595.
