Missing Teen Found Safe

By Sentinel Staff

A 14-year-old girl reported missing Sunday morning returned to her home around 4 p.m. later that day, Sitka police said.

The Sitka Police Department received a request from a parent asking for help finding the girl, who left her Arrowhead Street home sometime after 11:30 p.m. Saturday night, and was last seen by friends around 9:30 a.m. Sunday, police said. Sitka police used the department’s call-bursting system that sends a voice announcement to telephones in town, and text messages to those who have signed up for that service.

Announcements also were made on Sitka’s two radio stations.

More than 33 members of the Sitka Fire Department – both volunteers and staff – and Sitka police conducted an “urban search” for the girl, Assistant Fire Chief Al Stevens said. The search involved interviewing friends and neighbors, and following up on leads about her whereabouts.

“It was pretty extensive,” Stevens said.

A family friend found the girl in a vehicle near the girl’s home, Stevens said. Police said in today’s dispatch reports from the weekend that the girl was fine, but a little shaky, and was taken to the hospital at her request.
