Open Skating Set

Community Schools announces that open roller skating will be offered 4:30-6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, at Blatchley Middle School.

The cost is $2 for students, $4 for adults, and $8 a family. Skate rentals are $2 and are limited in sizes and skates.

Local Art Sought

For Benefit Auction

The Sitka Health Summit and the Greater Sitka Arts Council are soliciting pieces of original local art for a joint fundraising auction.

Artwork should respond to the question, “What does personal or community health mean to me?” Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Health Summit, the Arts Council, and the artists themselves. All styles of art are welcome.

Christmas Parade

Set for Dec. 13

The annual Landlubbers Christmas Parade will be 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. Participants will line up at ANB Harbor at 4:30 p.m. 

Everyone is invited to meet prior to the the parade at 5 p.m. at Totem Square  to sign up for a drawing at 5:15 p.m. for a child and his parent to ride in the parade – on the fire truck, with Santa – to the SJ Campus.

The public can follow the parade down Lincoln Street to the SJ Campus for the tree-lighting event at 6 p.m. The parade will deliver Santa to Kettleson Memorial Library at the former Stratton Library building, where the Rotary Club will help Santa hand out books to the children.

The Summer Music Festival will offer cider and cookies and Girl Scouts will lead in the singing of carols under the tree.

Holiday Tree

Lighting Slated

Sitka Fine Arts Camp is partnering with Sitka Summer Music Festival to present the 4th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting on Dec. 13.

The event will begin with the downtown holiday parade and will culminate on the Sheldon Jackson campus with the tree lighting. There will be carols from the Girls Scouts and cookies and hot cider at Stevenson Hall, all followed by a visit with Santa at Kettleson in Stratton. The parade begins at 5:30 p.m. at ANB Hall, immediately followed by the Tree Lighting at 6. 

 

Concert Sold Out

The Sitka Folk concert on Nov. 28 at the Loft is sold out.

 

Live Radio Plays

Set to Be Staged

Sitka Community Theater will present an evening of Live Radio Theater 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Sitka Performing Arts Center.

The show features local actors performing a classic Sherlock Holmes Christmas mystery from 1945, a classic Western from the 1950s, and four short original works by Seattle playwright John Longenbaugh.

The program is presented in the style of a Reader’s Theater production, with actors reading off scripts on stage. The live show will include both visual effects, and live sound effects performed on stage.

A reception will follow for a chance to talk to the actors, and meet Longenbaugh. The program will be recorded for rebroadcast later on KCAW-FM.

Tickets are $8, $6 for students and seniors, at Old Harbor Books and at the door. Those with questions may call 738-0602.

 

Fish and Game

Advisory Meets

The Sitka Fish and Game Advisory Committee will meet 6:30 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Legislative Information Office, 201 Katlian Street, Suite 1-3.

On the agenda will be the Board of fish shellfish and finfish (herring) proposals.

The panel also will meet 6:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Sitka Sound Science Center. Agenda items will be Board of Fish herring, groundfish and salmon proposals. Advisory Committee election seats open are trapping, resident sport fishing, at large, charter and processor.

Seven Keystone Kops took oaths on the Pioneers Home lawn Thursday, promising to create  chaos and disorder and start raising money for the annual Alaska Day celebration. For $2 you can buy this year’s button and avoid the Kops customary “fine” of a kiss.

October 1974

Photo caption: Sgt. John McConnaughey, Alaska State Trooper, swears in the Keystone Cops, officially launching Sitka’s annual Alaska Day celebration. The Cops will “arrest” and fine those not in costume, with the proceeds to help pay for the celebration.
