Open Mic Nov. 30
Sitka Folk will host an open mic Sunday, Nov. 30, at the Larkspur Cafe.
Musicians, poets and humorists are being encouraged to sign up for a 10-minute performance slot after 6 p.m. The show will start at 7 p.m. A $5 donation is encouraged as this is a benefit for Sitka Folk. Call Ted Howard at 747-5482 with questions.
Unitarians Meet
Rich McClear will speak on “Culture Shock America” at Sunday’s Unitarian Fellowship meeting.
Rich and Suzi McClear recently arrived home from more than six years abroad.
‘‘With its emphasis on Black Friday and consumerism trumping any idea of giving thanks or any reflection on the coming Advent/Christmas season, they were disoriented,’’ the fellowship said. ‘‘They suffered worse culture shock in returning to America than they did when they moved to Albania. America can be a confusing place. Rich will talk about his and Suzi’s ‘reverse culture shock’ and things that foreigners coming to the U.S. on study tours or scholarships find surprising, and difficult, about adjusting to life in the USA.’’
Fellowship begins at 10:30 a.m., with the program beginning at 10:45 a.m. A children’s program is provided. Soup and bread follow the program at noon. The Fellowship Hall is located at 408 Marine Street, with parking behind off Spruce Street.

Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital adds General Surgeon
SEARHC-Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital announces the recent hiring of general surgeon Dr. Patricia McPherson. She begins work at the consortium on Dec. 1, and will be filling a position that has been vacant for quite some time.
McPherson earned her medical degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. She most recently has been a surgeon at Claremore Indian Hospital in Claremore, Okla.
McPherson did her internship and residency at East Tennessee State University, which functions within three healthcare systems at four hospitals, – two tertiary referral/Level I trauma centers, a 114-bed Veterans Affairs Hospital, and a 348-bed community hospital.
While McPherson is new to Southeast Alaska, she is not new to the state; she received her two bachelor of science degrees from the University of Alaska Anchorage where she graduated with honors.
“SEARHC is very lucky to have a surgeon with Dr. McPherson’s skills and expertise joining our team,’’ Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital Administrator Noel Rea said. ‘‘We look forward to her leadership in the coming year.”
