Better Breathers

Meeting Friday

The Better Breathers Club will meet 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Swan Lake Senior Center.

Fish and Game

Advisory Meets

Sitka Fish and Game Advisory Committee will meet 6:30 p.m. Jan. 14 at Sitka Sound Science Center.

Martin Luther King

Day to be Observed

The community is invited to a celebration of Martin Luther King Day to be held in the Blatchley Middle School Library 3:45 p.m. Jan. 19.

Americorp Volunteers and BMS will be honoring the youth volunteers of Sitka.

Chicken noodle soup will be served, a short program will be offered, and the traditional MLK Day carrot cake will follow. A short open mike will be available to those wanting to speak.

Open Skate Slated

Sitka Community Schools will host an open skate 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Blatchley Middle School.

The cost is $2 for students, $5 for adults and $8 for a family. Limited skates and sizes are available for $2 a pair.

 

Registration Open

For Fine Arts Camp

Registration is open for Sitka Fine Arts Camp, which provides students with an interdisciplinary opportunity for arts exploration.

More than 60 different classes are offered in theater, dance, music, creative writing, visual arts, Alaska Native Arts and digital arts. Students can experiment and discover new arts as well as study arts they are already familiar with.

Last summer the camp served students from 38 different Alaska communities. Sitka Fine Arts Camp registration is available now at www.fineartscamp.org.

Programs are available for all ages. Elementary camps run June 8-12, middle school June 14-27, high school June 28-July 12, musical theater July 12-26, Native jazz workshop July 12-19, and Dee Daniels vocal jazz workshop July 17-24.

Cervical Cancer

Awareness On

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month, and SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium reminds women to schedule a health screening.

Cervical cancer is caused by a common virus called human papillomavirus, and is preventable, SEARHC said.

A vaccine is available that provides protection against HPV for pre-teens. Additionally, regular pap and HPV tests give health providers a chance to notice changes in the cervix before they become cervical cancer. 

Information is available from local providers about annual exams what tests or vaccines are needed.

 

On Honor Roll

Kaycie L. Coleman, a freshman in pre-public health, and Cooper E. Gale, a senior in electrical and computer engineering, have been named to the honor roll at Oregon State University, Corvallis.

The students earned a 3.5 grade-point average or higher. To be on the honor roll, students must carry at least 12 graded hours of course work.

 

Kaagwaantaan

Meeting Sunday

Kaagwaantaans will meet 2 p.m. Sunday at Blatchley Middle School, room 114.

Tlingit Language

For Beginners Set

Tlingit language practice for beginners is slated noon-1 p.m. Mondays. No experience is needed. For more information call  Roby Littlefield at 738-4004.

 

Voc-Tech Grant

Apps Accepted

Sealaska Heritage Institute is accepting scholarship applications for the 2015-2016 school year, and is offering an incentive.

The deadline to apply is March 1; however, the institute is offering a $50 incentive to those who complete their scholarship application on or before Feb. 1 and who are accepted as scholarship recipients. If selected as a recipient, the $50 will be included in their scholarship award.

Scholarships must be filled out and submitted online from SHI’s website, www.sealaskaheritage.org.

Awards will be made to Sealaska shareholders and descendants enrolled in accredited colleges, universities and voc-tech schools. The scholarships are given to roughly 400 students per year.

 

Teacher Award

Nominees Sought

The public can nominate Alaska teachers by Jan. 30 for a BP Teacher of Excellence award.

Winners will receive a $500 gift card and a $500 matching grant to their school. Anyone can nominate a BP Teacher of Excellence by visiting BPteachers.com. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 30.

Since the program’s inception in 1995, BP has recognized more than 620 Alaska teachers. Last year, BP recognized 30 Teachers of Excellence from more than 1,400 nominations received from across the state.

Mt. Edgecumbe High School teacher Michael Mahoney was awarded in 2012, and MEHS teacher Christy Renee Anderson was a winner in 2014.

 

Revitalize Sitka

Meeting on Tap

Revitalize Sitka: Creating a Vibrant Community will meet 8:30 a.m.-10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, in the Centennial Hall Rousseau Room to discuss future plans for revitalization efforts this year.

Those interested in revitalizing Sitka, with ideas to share, are invited to attend. 

 

Poetry Club Set

At Kettleson

The Kettleson Poetry Club for children ages 7-11 begins 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, upstairs at Kettleson Memorial Library for an hour. The group will continue to meet every other Thursday January-April. Calendars of meeting dates will be given to members at the first meeting.

Club members will read, listen to, and discuss poems; talk about poetry terms; do lots of writing; and gear up for recording and performing our original poems. Senior Biking

Club to Meet

SAIL invites Sitkans ages 60 and older to the “New Year, New You, New Fun” Biking Club.

The group will meet at SAIL and bike to Whale Park and back 10-11:30 a.m. Jan. 8. The ride is approximately four miles. The group will work up to a seven-mile ride from downtown to the end of Halibut Point Road this summer.

Native Business

Class Set Jan. 13

The Native Procurement Technical Assistance Center will hold free business workshops 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi.

‘‘Growing Your Business – Is the Government Your Next Customer?’’ will run at 9 a.m. followed by ‘‘Marketing to Agencies and Prime Contractors’’ at 1 p.m.

Native PTAC is a community resource whose intent is to help new and established individual, tribal, ANC and NHO owned Native enterprises become more successful in contracting with federal, state, local and tribal government contracts. Services are free and open to the public.

Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
