Art Subject of

UAS Classes

The University of Alaska Southeast offers four art courses during spring semester, beginning Jan. 12. These include two general education requirement courses offered online and two studio art classes – ceramics and artists studio.

Art 160 Art Appreciation is taught by UAS assistant professor Liz Zacher. Its goal is to stimulate thought and widen perspective, UAS said. By exposing students to a variety of artistic work via online lecture and class discussion, the course offers students an opportunity to stretch their knowledge and inspire fresh thinking about the messages and benefits of the arts. It is three credits, and will run Wednesdays, 5-6:30 p.m.  or 7-8:30 p.m.

Art 262 History of World Art II is also taught by Zacher. The online GER completes the series begun each fall. The spring course begins with the art of the Gothic or Middle Ages period and continues to the present time. UAS said that it is not necessary to take these classes in sequence. It is three credits, and offered Thursdays, 5-6:30 p.m.

Art 201/301/401 Ceramics Studio class meets 6-9 p.m. Mondays. The beginning class introduces preparation of clay for firing, and glazing techniques. Intermediate students focus on the potter’s wheel, glaze calculations and plaster as it relates to pottery. Advanced students will pursue their interests in advanced wheelwork or techniques of handbuilding, clay body calculation, and commercial applications of ceramics. UAS has a large kiln capacity, both electric and gas-fired kilns as well as a raku kiln.

Art 230/330/430 Artists Studio meets 9 a.m.-noon Fridays. Students will work in a variety of media to design and complete their independent projects.

UAS has two master ceramacists on staff to help them learn their art: Liz Zacher and Robert Rose. For more information go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BD5mWsYV9w

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
